the cats bah

February 19, 2009

Imagine my surprise when I found out that Pip had never seen this cartoon, and so had no idea why I had been saying come with me to the kasbaaah in a silly voice all week. So on our first night in the Kasbah I looked this up and played it for her.

Does anybody else remember this one?

Originally, wasn’t the reference to the film Algiers?

It was… “The Cats Bah” was, itself, a play on the title of the original French film that “Algiers” was a remake of, “Pepe le Moko”.

The line “”Come with me to the Casbah” wasn’t actually in the film “Algiers”, though it was in the trailers. Of course, Pepe singing “As Time Goes By” is a nod to “Casablanca”

The end of the Pepe le Pew cartoon is rather dated… You couldn’t have that in an ending, these days.

“Le Mew”, indeed. Pepe Le Pew, so optimistic…and so stalkery.

I’d never seen it before either. An enjoyable diversion at work.

    TRiG.
