slow sundays…

I find Sundays in Seville kind of sad somehow. All the shops are closed and the streets feel less alive. Though this summer I am grateful not to hear jackhammering and buzzsawing at 7am at least one day out of the week (construction on building next door). But I always feel a bit lost on a Sunday, like I don’t know what to do, where to go.
How about you? What do you like doing on Sundays?

As you know I’ve always kind of wished that the UK still had one day a week where Mammon didn’t rule the lives of the population, who as I type wil be throwing themselves at shopping malls the length of the country as though ‘shopping’ was end in itself and not a means to an end.
Today I’ll be being idle. Last day of an epic Tour De France and Sara will probably want to be watching the showjumping from Hickstead. Sara’s working tonight as well, so we don’t want to be hacking round the place.
If Sara hadn’t been working maybe we’d have gone out somewhere to enjoy the sun, I don’t know. We have a very busy schedule throughout August so Sundays will be mostly recovery days, I suspect.
For the foreseeable future Sundays will be spent trying to get the garden back into order after the six weeks of neglect it suffered while I was away in China and Scotland.
Just as well I like gardening

Nice to read your blogpost. I lived in Seville in 89/90 and your post absolutely brings back the memories. Especially in summer the Sundays are quiet, because everyone gets back in their houses to avoid the heath outside. Then during the evening the city sort of gets back to live.
Back then there was still the Alameda market on Sunday, which gave some live. I would get a book from the British library and sit and read in the gardens of the Alcazar.
Unexpectedly I have some time right now, so I’ve been looking at tickets to Seville, but the temperatures you mention…. I’m not sure yet.
It’s been a slow Sunday in the Lair as well. It’s the last day of my summer vacation so there are Things That Must Be Done as well. This is the main reason why I’m in front of the PC now, when the sun finally shows after being absent most of last week.
Anyway, it’s Back To W*rk tomorrow – and I’m quite convinced that the sunshine will be back as well…
Welll – at work today, probably next Sunday as well.
As with most other days, I just get through it somehow.
Just back from an evening walk and a COLD beer. Holy moly it was hot today. I spent most of it sleeping and reading. Too bad Málaga isn’t this week.
Steve, it isn’t that I want to buy anything, it’s just nice to browse in an airconditioned bookshop, or stop in at Fnac and drool over the gadgets.

Hi Amiek, and welcome! There have been a few changes since you were here. The British library is closed, and the Alameda market has been moved to a strip down by the river. I actually like the “ghost town” feeling here in August. It’s just Sundays I’ve never really got the hang of.
I don’t envy you that “last day of holiday” feeling. By the way, I can’t find the China photos – can you email me a link?
I think it’s better to work on Sundays and have a day off during the week, Johnny. But of course it’s different when you have a family and Sunday is the only time you can all be together.

I rather like Sundays here in Sydney – the city is sufficiently large and multi-cultural that most cafes and shops are still open (though the hours are shorter), except in the financial district. So you can still expect to get a lovely brunch by the beach on Sunday as well as doing some leisurely grocery shopping, and then maybe an early film in the evening. Perfect!
I usually try to get out on the river on Sundays. In the morning there is a post with a guest blogger telling all about what we did on this Sunday, which was about the most perfect sunday I’ve had in quite some time.
Well – if I had a day of in the week instead, yes!
Still, at least I am being paid for it.
ooh I love to stay at home on Sundays. Read the papers, potter around in the conservatory, pat the cat and clean the birdcage, maybe take a walk down the street and buy myself some flowers.
hey – can you get yourself a copy of Jim Jarmusch’s new film – The Limits of Control? Half of it is set in Seville and a pivotal scene is shot in one of those plazas just round the corner from the flat I rented. You will recognise every single street!!!!!

I absolutely LOVE Jim Jarmusch and can’t believe I didn’t know about him filming here, nursemyra. I’ve just checked Amazon and it’s not out on DVD yet. Ah well, something to look forward to.

That sounds a lot like Toronto, woo. Although I quite like stay at home “cat days” I do miss not having the option of doing a bit of browsing & shopping on a Sunday.

Sundays are usually spent (as with many Saturdays) driving out in the country, either checking on the Ospreys (the young have suddenly gone from still being fed by the parents to eating on their own and out of the nests, soaring and generally showing off their flying prowess… in the last week!) and/or driving up and down country roads looking for abandoned cemeteries, taking photos of same as well as just about anything else we happen on….
It has been raining like Hell off and on all week but we had lovely weather, if intermittently cloudy, during the days all weekend. Thunderstorm early this morning!
