… with the emphasis on “odd”.

At first glance these two photos may appear to be what they look like: a pair of closed balcony doors and an electric fan. But in fact they are examples of “if you don’t look too closely it’ll pass muster”. As some of you know there are six fabulous balconies here at casa az, which let in lots of light and really make the apartment feel bright and spacious. But none of the balcony doors have ever closed properly due to the landlord not doing regular maintenance – they are all warped and rotting because of this neglect. But suddenly, after years of neglect, this week Pepe the landlord took the too-little-too-late decision to hire an old carpenter to come and “fix” the doors. On all the apartments. The poor old geezer – he had no idea what he was in for. By the time he got to my apartment (the last) he was so fed up that every door caused him to exclaim that he hated doing work that was futile and that all these door should be ripped out and replaced … and of course I agreed. But I was very impressed that he actually managed to get all my doors to close again with the latches. There are still gaps but at least now they don’t blow open with every gust of wind. And so when it came to fixing my bedroom electric fan today I decided to take a lesson from lovely ol’ Juan (we were quite friendly by the end, a bit like comrades in arms)  and try to make do with what I could find at hand…

10 things I’d save if my house was on fire

I’ve been tagged by my friend Trucie to come up with a list of 10 things I would want to save from my home if it were suddenly engulfed in mysterious flame. This was a no-brainer for me because many years ago, when I was about 22 years old, I did actually wake up in the middle of the night with my apartment on fire. I’d been storing some boxes of my sister’s clothing & stuff out on the (wooden) porch while she was away on holiday and some fucktard decided to find out how well they would burn. And so by the time I woke up (luckily I’ve always been a light sleeper) and smelled smoke the whole porch was in flames and the porch door and windows had exploded into the front room. I was living with my musician boyfriend Ian at the time and, after making sure he was awake, I threw on a dressing gown and hustled him out the back door. You see, when it actually happens your mind doesn’t think about possessions. At least, mine didn’t.

Of course now my first thought would be to stuff the cats into the extra large carrier I bought specifically for this purpose (back when I had three cats) and get them to safety, along with me and Nog. So, that’s only four things. Though if there were enough time I’d probably grab my iPhone too. 😉

How about you? What would you save?

loki’s toys

A selection of Loki’s favourite toys, including some that should NOT be played with, but try telling him that. Not shown: my bras & knickers. It took awhile to round everything up – the little yellow shoelace (this came from his original home) was finally discovered in Loki’s Lair behind the books, and his purple cord was found buried in the laundry hamper. For some I just put a sample image (one pencil rather than ALL of my pens & pencils, one sock, and just a few business cards) and there are usually several crumpled paper balls going at any given time. Of the balls he seems to show a preference for the orange pingpong ball because it goes REALLY FAST, but lately he’s been playing more with the little green & white dingle ball, which as you can imagine is quite a joy to listen to around 3am. That green bouncy ball is actually a bit dangerous as when it is left directly against the front door it acts as an excellent door stop and the door cannot be opened from the outside. The green thread spools are always fun – they make more noise than the wine corks.  And business cards are not only challenging to pick up in his teeth but they are excellent for hoarding, usually behind the books, but often he just loves to display his captured prey on Sunny’s old bed, which he took over almost from day one.

Below you can see Loki spoiled for choice – he was clearly confused to see ALL HIS TOYS in one spot and finally opted for the crumpled paper ball. You can also see another of Loki’s favourite toys (too large to show here) as well as an example of kitteh hoarding… heh

Remember back in January when Sledpress sent me a fabulous birthday care package full of wonderful things to help make me feel better? Well, she’s gone and done it again, except this time even more so … and it isn’t even my birthday!

I’d just spent most of yesterday morning (after getting home from yoga class) dealing with landlord Pepe and the 100-year-old carpenter he’d brought over to “fix the doors and windows that don’t close properly”. Which are, well, all of them. And I felt so sorry for the old carpenter, who told me that if he’d known the state of things beforehand he’d never have accepted the job – he could see that all the doors and windows in the building were beyond repair and he didn’t like doing work that was “futile”. Anyhow, he managed to get the livingroom balcony doors so that they won’t fly open with every gust of wind, but there are still huge gaps that he said are impossible to repair because the doors are totally warped. He’s coming back on Thursday to tackle the rest of the doors. And in the middle of all this the postman rang up and said he had a package for me…
