bodum frykats

May 20, 2011

Aren’t these adorable? They even have a cute name – Frykats. And Ian (devonseaglass) informs me that they can be shipped by Lakeland in the UK for a small charge. But first I’ll look around here and I also need to do some more online research. One review I read about the Frykat says the vent on top can get burny, and that  it doesn’t work well without the lid on. I certainly won’t want to use the lid all the time. Heh, all the time, she says. I’m pretty sure that BBQing will prove to be a bit of a pain what with having to lug everything upstairs. But I’m also sure that on hot summer evenings it will be lovely sitting up on the terraza after the sun goes down and maybe grilling a light snack…

Meanwhile, my 10-year-old microwave suddenly kicked the bucket the other day, so that is vying for top spot on the “things to buy for the house” list. Have to admit that I only ever use it for defrosting and reheating coffee (well okay, and for making popcorn) and I especially miss not being able to reheat my coffee in the mornings.

Which would you get first?

Buy a frycat and use it to warm the coffee.

    Sorry I meant Frykat.

Third time lucky (why can’t the Danes speak English?) It’s a Fyrkat.

OMG – they are Fyrkats! So, not such a cute name after all… or maybe cuter?

There are probably just as good ones which are cheaper or better ones that aren’t as portable. I would probably invest in a more substantial one that will last for many, many years. There are also inexpensive propane ones.

Fyrkat is the name of a Viking fort, which leads me to believe this product of Danish genius would be at home with bloody flesh and willingly burn it after some mild rape and pillage.

I’ve never owned a microwave, and likely I never will. I prefer to reheat my leftovers other ways and I can live without microwave popcorn.

I do grill and bbq a lot, always with charcoal.

Coffee reheated any other way but in the microwave SUCKS. It’s bitter and awful. And just about every morning I get so involved with emails and social media stuff that my coffee goes cold after I’ve only had half a cup… usually end up reheating half cups of coffee about two or three times.

Time to adopt the green tea in a bag then. Saves a lot of bother and has other benefits, not least the need to have a microwave doo dah.

You make me think of an old favorite, which I still own.

I’d get the FRYCAT! It’s adorable.

Well, one thing that WeeRascal pointed out about the Frycat is that there isn’t any sort of fat outlet, so all of the drippings would end up mixed in with the coals and it would be a big gloopy mess to clean out…

Dripping on coals. Well it will either evaporate, burn or explode, depending on the temperature of the coals. If the coals were cold there would be no dripping at all.

Microwave. I don’t believe I could live without a microwave anymore.
Popcorn. Tea water. Coffee reheating. Melt the butter a tiny bit when it’s too cold.
Nuke last night’s pizza for a second to take the fridge chill off.

We have a big gas grill. I absolutely love itl Nice steel grates, drip pan. No fuss, no muss, and it’s a breeze to use. I don’t think the taste difference between gas and charcoal is enough to justify the mess you always have to deal with using charcoal. YMMV if you’re a charcoal purist.
