appliancide

Remember the other day when my 10-year-old microwave kicked the bucket, which left me in a quandry about whether a new microwave or a BBQ would take priority? Well, turns out neither after my 7-year-old toaster decided it would toast no more… wtf? Actually, I think I aided its demise because I’ve been toasting a lot of Portuguese bread lately, which is a bit too “short” to get out of the toaster without sticking something sharp into it… whatever. So today I found this cute little flat toaster for a mere 19€, which I think solves a lot of our toasting issues here at casa az. But it’s seriously left me wondering what’s going to be next.

Or maybe it’s the kitchen that’s jinxed. Why just yesterday I put on some asparagus for Azar, leaving two perfect stalks to gently steam in a flat pan while I went back to my laptop to do a bit of tweeting and other social media stuff. About half an hour later I wondered who was making toast (certainly couldn’t have been anyone here!) and that’s when I found that the pan was burned beyond hope, the asparagus had turned to charcoal and even the hard ceramic-plastic knob on top of the lid had melted. Then about an hour later I looked in the freezer for some ice and found a bottle of wine that I’d put in there the day before for a “quick chill”. I don’t understand. I have both a Portuguese lucky kitchen cat and a Chinese lucky money cat up above the cooker. Where am I going wrong?

Perhaps a Remembrall like in Harry Potter? Turns blue if you’ve forgotten something.

I could actually just set the timer on my iPhone … if I’d remember to do it.

Has Loki been gravity testing the lucky cats perhaps?

    • May 24, 2011 11:36 pm

Curiously, Loki still hasn’t figured out that he can jump up on the kitchen counter tops. And the lucky cats are up on a high shelf above the cooker.

But SOMETHING is definitely going on…

You know my theory that the cats are in league with the toasters….

I’m not sure that I would want a toaster that lies flat 1) in case it got left on and something fell on it or 2) because it would take up so much room on the counter. I have a toaster which is long and thin rather than squat and square. It sits at the back of the counter and leaves a lot of space in front.

Aha, but this toaster is “az proof” and cannot be left on. There isn’t an on/off switch, just a timer knob thingy. And it doesn’t actually take up much more space than the other one did. Wouldn’t have worked so well in the old place, but I’ve got lots more counter space here.

I’m glad its not just me who does things like that in the kitchen. Seriously, I shouldn’t be allowed near appliances…

Appliancide? That’s an interesting word ;-)

I thought you’d like it! Kind of like when your appliances decide to commit mass suicide, right?

      Thanks for the new word!

Never owned a toaster – that’s what the grill on the cooker is for. Couldn’t live without the microwave.

In Bristol I had this very cool gas grill above the cooker and I used it ALL the time. Didn’t need a toaster.

Here the grill is inside the electric oven and would probably cost a small fortune to fire up a couple of times a day.

      Really missing the microwave…

It would seem that you, like I have CRAFT disease. One deep stainless steel pan, one pyrex dish and one kettle down and out for me.

    Can’t

    Remember

    A

    Fucking

    Thing

    Cheers!

For me it is glassware. If you break one, the others will follow in quick succession. I will have them for years and within a week, they will all get smashed.
