my poor darling

Looks like I won’t be going away this weekend. Azar hasn’t had a bowel movement since Monday and today he is decidedly unwell. If things change for the better overnight (this has been happening for awhile now – days with nothing then boom!) then I may reconsider. A Spanish speaking friend had offered to stay “on call” and go with Nog to the vet if Azar took a turn for the worse, but this was a precaution before he got so floppy. I couldn’t leave him the way he is looking now. And if he hasn’t had a poo by tomorrow I’ll be taking him in to see the vet myself.

The weird thing is that he’s still got a good appetite and is drinking lots of water. But even with daily servings of steamed asparagus and malt extract (and, since yesterday, two doses of paraffin) he still can’t go. As I say, for the last while he’s only been going every two or three days, but four days is new, and just way too long.

I have to go out on a tapas tour tonight, but I’ll just be a phone call and a few mintues away if anything happens. Will keep you posted.

Oh no! So sorry to hear this, Az. I hope the little guy feels better soon – and that he poops sooner!

Thanks for all your well wishes everyone!

In the Why Didn’t I Think Of This Sooner Dept … I remembered this morning that I still had some of those little one-squirt glysterine baby enemas. So I surprised Azar with one during a snibble and ten minutes later he was cleaned out. So for sure the next time he goes more than two days without a bowel movement I’ll just give him a squirt. Duh!

He’s been to the vet about this problem before and, after x-rays and other tests, no “blockage” was found and he was just given an enema. It’s probably related to kidney stuff, or maybe it’s just old age. I’m sure that 90-year-old humans aren’t so regular either. In any case, I’m going to postpone the vet visit for now and see how Azar gets on over the next few days.

I’m also going to postpone my trip, even though Azar is probably well enough now to be left with Nog for a couple of days. The odds seem to be conspiring against me about this, with Agustín’s apt still being uninhabitable due to renovations, plus no way of getting back to Sevilla other than a 6am bus on Monday (bus companies don’t start their summer schedule until next weekend!). Charo had offered me the use of one of her father’s apartments, but it’s in a tiny place just outside Zahara and I’d have no way of getting around, let alone to the bus stop at 6am. So, oh well…

The important thing is that Azar is resting comfortably after the enema event and I feel a lot less worried now. I also feel a bit stupid for not remembering about this option sooner, but at least now I know it’s there and if it has to become a part of Azar’s regular “old age” maintenance, then at least it’s a fairly easy one to manage.

    *big sigh of relief*

Part of the er…pooing process is something called peristalsis in the intestines, which is helped by being active. Old folks and old cats don’t move around as much as they age. By all means, don’t forget to keep that baby stuff on hand! So glad the little guy is better!

Oh, the indignity! Poor Azar. But at least he’s on the mend.

    Ah, good news then :-)
