unexpected…

December 29, 2011

Spotted yesterday under the Setas.

About a week before Christmas I went out to the market early in the morning, turned the corner towards the Mushrooms and went … whoah! Camels! A whole whack of them were being groomed. So of course I had to stop and take some photos, and also find out what they were doing there. Turns out they are part of the Christmas market that was set up in the plaza, and the camels are for kiddie rides. Well, it’s been almost two weeks and every time I see the camels they make me smile. But the shetland ponies are cuter.

What was the last unexpected thing you saw?

I don’t know about the LAST unexpected thing… The camels made me think of caravans and gypsy caravans and that made me think of something that I saw way back in the late 1960s and no one would believe I saw it.

My friend’s family used to bring me along when they went camping Northwest of Ottawa. We were driving through the country and I was looking out the window and across a field I saw a gypsy caravan! It was brightly painted and was trundling along a dirt road. I said something along the line of “Did you see THAT!” “See what?” they asked. “A gypsy caravan!” I said…

They said I must have imagined it. Why would I imagine a gypsy caravan in the middle of Eastern Ontario farm country??? They teased me for weeks about it.

A few years ago I came across a couple of camels, a llama and an elephant on a street in Nurnberg. There was snow on the ground as we made our way along a pedestrianised street to the Christmas market.
Apparently they were a live advertisement for the circus but it was rather surreal and still makes me smile at the thought of it.
