Today is Palm Sunday, the official start of Semana Santa in Sevilla, and I was reminded of this video I posted on the Azahar Sevilla blog three years ago. I’d taken it not knowing that it was going to be my last Easter Holy Week in my old house, that it would be the last time I heard this beautiful march played below my bedroom balconies at 1 in the morning as the Santa Cruz procession made its way back home.
I’ll tell you right now that it’s not very good quality, but you can catch a bit of the tune, which I finally found out (after putting this on YouTube) that it’s called La Madrugá by Abel Moreno.
And now I prepare for a week of madness. I have a crazy amount of tapas tours and I’m still not over the cold-flu thing that caused me to lose my voice for the first time in my life. What are you doing this week?

It has so many components; sadness, majesty, dignity, tradition and ethnicity all spring to mind. I am still getting used to our small towns renditions of things that sound as though they originate from the Sicilian scenes from the Godfather. I keep watching out for Al Pacino and his troops to spring from black cars…. its a tense week for me here :o)

Heh, you’re right about the Sicilian scenes from the Godfather – something similar there. Meanwhile, I’ve been waiting for Al Pacino to spring out at me most of my life… 😉

I suppose I’m a bit daft and Teutonic but it makes me think of this (I just encountered this performance a week or so ago):
I used to lose my voice regularly as a child — because in those days everyone smoked. My first school concert, I had to lip-sync.
This week, I think I’m shopping for a refrigerator. The one I have is almost old enough to vote and it doesn’t want to stay shut any more.

Happy to say my voice has pretty much returned but my ears are still ringing and I can’t smell a damn thing. Doc Agustín says that if I haven’t improved by tomorrow then I’ll have to go on antibiotics. I’m hoping the killer-hot and garlicky “pollo al ajillo” I’ve just made will help me sweat it out…
