I’m very glad I bought my cute little 1 GB shuffle because it’s not only perfect for the gym (and only cost 45€) but it also helped me realise that the 8 GB nano I’d been considering (which costs 180€) would have never been big enough. Once I started copying some old music files from the Jag, as well as getting some tunes from my friend Agustín last week, I found I already had 3 GBs of music – and I ‘ve barely got started.
So I cruised by Fnac after work last night and found a couple of these nero babies hanging around on a top shelf, reduced to 170€. Turns out it’s a somewhat older model ipod that’s about the same size as the snazzy new touchpad model … and it has 80 GBs! (the 32 GB touchpad model costs about 450€)
Has anybody ever had one of these or know anything about them?
Would I be totally nuts not to buy one?
Don’t know anything about them unfortunately – apart from the (slight) risks of buying stuff that is older, support runs out sooner etc.
You have seen the truth of my comment about needing more, rather than less, space then?

Definitely, Johnny. In fact, there was another ipod at Fnac last night with 160 GBs (!) that also cost less than the new touchpad 32 GB one, but it was still twice as much as the nero (which I can just about afford, since I’ll also need an ipod speaker gizmo to go with it as I’m planning on getting a LOT more digital music and will also want to listen to it at home without earphones).
I don’t think the nero is waayyy old, and it’s not only cheaper than the nano but it also has about 4 times the space.
Thing is, the shuffle suits my gym and walking around town music/podcast needs, especially as it doesn’t require pockets, so getting a nano would kind of be redundant for me. When I want more music – like on a trip or something – the nero would fit neatly into my shoulder bag.
But before I decide on the nero I’ll have a look at the Apple store here to see what they’ve got and also what info they can give me on the nero. I did in fact buy the nero last night as there were only three of them left at Fnac, but it’s still in the packaging and they said I had a week to return it.

The nero is indeed a lot of space for the price. Don’t worry about itunes not supporting it, either. I have an iPod mini, which was discontinued in September, 2005. It still works great and all itunes updates include it.

Never heard of it. I feel so left out all of a sudden. How did this Nero escape me?

I hadn’t heard of the Nero, either. It sounds like a good deal, though.
(And funny how fast you realized that 8 gb is too small!)

Well, it turns out there’s a very good reason nobody has heard of the ‘nero’ – it’s because I’m stupid! 🙂
The other day when I was looking on google images for a pic to put here I typed in the model number that was on the box to make sure I got the right one, since I was told it was an older model. And it said ‘ipod nero’ on the photo I found (actually, there were two photos, both saying ‘ipod nero’, that I put together here to get a front and side view).
But when I went to the Apple shop today and asked for information about the ipod nero the guy told me he’d never heard of it and even looked on the internet when I insisted that it existed, but he couldn’t find it. He said it had to be just an older version of the ipod classic, but I knew I’d seen the words ‘ipod nero’ with my own eyes.
Anyhoo, on my way home I had a sudden memory flash and recalled that the two websites I got my pics from were Italian. And so – duh – ‘ipod nero’ simply meant ‘black ipod’. What a maroon! Anyhow, now I don’t have to think of a cool name for it (I do like naming my gadgets).
Except that now . . . bear with me . . . I am wondering if I should get the most up-to-date ipod classic I saw in the Apple shop instead, which is matte black with 80 GBs for 120 € (50€ more for an extra 50 GBs).
Am I just being silly now? Will I ever need 80 GBs?

lol – nice one 😉
You know my opinion without asking. If you can afford it you’re more likely to regret not having enough space than . . .

. . . also, it’s 240€ everywhere else, but the Apple shop has it at a reduced price (220€) at the moment.
You’re right, alejna, I can’t believe that just two weeks ago I was hemming and hawing about whether 4 or 8 GBs would be better.
Compared to the nano my ‘nero’ is an excellent deal, but compared to the new classic . . . ?

Found a new way to rationalise the new ‘classic nero’. Which is to stop comparing it to the old one and compare it to the nano.
Cos, 8 GBs of nano for 180 € compared to 220€ for 80 GBs of nero … there’s no question, right?
Except I thought I’d like the matte black better before I touched it. The older, shinier model also looks easier to keep clean.
Gaaa!!! Could someone please make up my mind for me???

Ahahaha I almost thought I was crazy. I’m so with technology and such I was actually depressed and took pills 🙂

Well, the guy in the Apple shop sure thought I was crazy, uw. I stopped by again the next day and told him my story, which made him laugh.
Then yesterday I finally decided to take the plunge and bought the 80 GB ‘nero’ (took the 30 GB one back to Fnac). It’s very smart – looks just like the pic above except it’s matte black instead of shiny.
And good timing what with this trip to Tavira tomorrow. I’ve stuck all my music on it (4 GBs as it turns out) and will have fun playing with it on the bus as I still haven’t figured out how the menu works. I told Nog he could borrow my shuffle for the trip but as he’s 80% deaf in one ear he says that stereo earphones don’t really work well for him. Ah well.
We’re taking Nog’s laptop with us (the ‘guesthouse’ we’re staying at has wifi) so we’ll also be able to listen to music in our room, which will be nice.
I’m a bit like ‘a kid with new shoes’ as the saying goes in Spanish. 🙂
