Well, I found it! Just by chance after my friend Flor sent me an email last night saying she’d seen a for rent sign up on a building around the corner from her place. So I called and it sounded wonderful – and also too expensive – but I thought it was worth looking at. And man, it’s perfect. Bigger than I was looking for with three bedrooms instead of two (though really one “bedroom” is more of an office space) and 100 square metres not including the massive terrace. On two floors without the dangerous-for-cats spiral staircase. Clean, freshly painted, unfurnished (yay!). Tons of light everywhere, and balconies. The kitchen has loads of cupboard space, the two bedrooms also have lots of closet and storage space. The drawback? The price! And I am so trying to rationalise and figure out how to say yes to this place. My maximum price was set at 750 euros, a hundred euros more than I’m paying now, but I was hoping for 700. But the thing is, this apartment is actually worth the price. Which is 850 euros, and which the owners say they are willing to lower to 800 euros and guarantee that price for two years.
And so, 50 euros more than my maximum price, and 150 more than I am paying now. To be honest, if Peter was working more and paying his share then I could afford it. This irks, because the whole point of sharing your dwelling is to cut costs – this is not happening for me at the moment. Another option is to rent out the “third bedroom” for a few months until things get sorted, to see if Peter gets his shit together. Because really, if I have to share the place then it makes sense to do it with someone who can actually pay, right? I can put up with three for a short time, but hey, there’s only one bathroom. And I know I can find people willing to take that room here on short-term rental, because the apartment is fantastic. And the owners know I’m in love with it, and have given me first option, though I have to decide this week.
Well, I guess you’re wondering what the place looks like. Here are some pics I took this morning with my iPhone that don’t really do it justice, and the apartment was still in the midst of painting and cleaning, and they’ll be hanging curtains, etc, but you can at least get an idea (click on all the collages to enlarge)…
The entrance leads to the main floor of the apartment with a small bedroom to the right, all of which surrounds a pretty square of windows opening onto a glass-covered patio.
After you pass through the entrance corridor, the kitchen is on the right and you walk into the livingroom, which has three balconies. The bathroom is between the kitchen and main bedroom (mine!) which also has a balcony and massive closet.
And upstairs… well, this is to die for. As soon as I got to the top and saw all the bookshelves! I knew this was my home. Because this room not only opens onto a fabulous terrace but also is so full of light and would end up being my own personal space. A room of my own. The livingroom downstairs I could leave for Peter and the “maybe” third tenant.
Guys, I want this place so much I am totally aching with desire. Not sure how I’d pay a heftier deposit and moving fees yet … but was talking with Manu at the gym after I’d seen my new home and he told me I’d be crazy not to take it, and that it was important to “look ahead without fear”. And I agree. Except I also have a PET scan on Friday. And goddammit, if I end up on chemo again, how can I afford to move anywhere??
So, whaddaya think?

Yeah well, I did that for eight years when I lived in the apartment next door, and I was hoping to not have to do that again, but this place is so fab that I think it’s worth it, at least temporarily. Because if my various biz projects take off, and my health stays healthy, then there’s no reason I won’t be making enough to afford this with ONE tenant by the end of the year. Whether this ends up being Nog or someone else … well, we’ll see. And maybe this will finally motivate him to pull his weight around here.
It’s in a great neighbourhood – the Alfalfa – just five minutes from where I live now. It’s two minutes to my gym, there are markets and supermarkets all nearby, and I know this barrio like the back of my hand.
It really has to be my new home, doesn’t it? Am going to ask Agustín if he might consider paying for his English classes a couple of months in advance so I can pay the deposit…

It looks and sounds wonderful. Only you know what you can and can’t afford, so I’ll be the boring voice of conscience and say – remember you set that maximum for a good reason! Doesn’t mean it can’t be broken, but needs to be backed up by something.

I love this apartment! And it looks like it would suit you perfectly. I can already see you there. It’s a good price too. Hell, just go for it, it’s too good too miss.

Wow! Ir really looks great! A pity Nog can’t help out with rent (yet). Hopefully you’ll find someone for the third room. There are plenty of tourists who look for short-term renting, perhaps that’s an idea. Talk to language schools e.g..
Hey, and please let me know if you need some help with moving or anything else!
Love,
Caroline

I just called the owner and asked him to write up the contract. Eeek!
He knows that I’ll need a day or so to get my lawyer (my buddy Paco) to look it over. In fact, when I told them that Paco won’t let me sign anything without letting him see it first they laughed and said they come from a family of 16 lawyers and they would expect nothing less.
So this buys me some time to see what the PET scan results are going to be (goddamn but I’m suddenly terrified – they just called this morning to confirm Friday’s appointment).
Also, just got word that a dear friend may well rent out that spare room for six months, which would be so perfect that I can hardly believe it.
It’s my home. I know it. Time to stop being afraid and move forward.

I was just going to say that you should go for it and celebrate a clean PET scan with a new home.
Some people buy a box of chocolates but I think a new _home_ is waaaaayyyy better.
Maybe you could do an additional option to the tapas tours, involving the third bedroom. Singles travelling is never fun…Maybe you could offer weekend breaks or something?

I can’t tell you how glad for you I am that you found a home, not just an apartment. You’ve gotta believe your luck is on the up and Friday will continue the trend.

Wow, the flat looks terrific. I can’t wait to see it with furniture and stuff!
I suspect the best place will be taken by the cats though 😉

Of all the places I’ve seen this one is the most “cat friendly”. Not sure about letting them out on the terrace. I’m sure Azar would be fine, but it would only take one bird for Loki to go over the top…

What Steve said. You need a place to live in, and it will be so much easier for you to move to a place you’ll love and feel well in. Does it have a/c and heating?

Yes, but it’s central, so probably won’t use it a lot. Or will shut off half the vents. At least it’s an option. Oh, and the windows are all new and double-glazed.

Well, it looks & sounds perfect apart from the price being more than you feel you can afford … but “where there’s a will, there’s a way” & you are obviously actively thinking of ways to make this a reality. I assume Nog is equally as taken with the apartment as you are & will therefore realise that he needs to contribute more & be motivated to actively look for more paid work!?! Will be thinking of you for Friday & praying for a good result. x x x

Looks gorgeous, well done! Just make sure there’s some heating and the windows close properly, remember how cold your current place is. Easy to get swept away by all that light, the terrace etc (drinks round yours come spring??!!) and not think abotu the boring practicalities. Great location, by the way!

I’m sure the cats will like it as well.
My landlord has not allowed me to net my balcony, but so far (touch woood) the Lair Cats have been good and not tried to jump off the balcony.

Double glazed windows are good, hopefully they shut tight. Being able to keep the elements out is a big deal, don’t downplay the importance because you’re taken with the place. That said, it looks really nice, especially upstairs. 🙂 It’s easy to see you there. I hope you take it. [Yes, mother]
Love the idea of renting out a room for a night as part of the tapas experience. With people who are spending just one day in Seville it would be perfect. Maybe not with only one bathroom, though. You’d have to weigh that pretty carefully.
Good luck Friday. I’ll be thinking about you.

The one bathroom thing really does make having visitors not such a great idea, but it may not come to that if you-know-who gets more work.

I agree that you’re still going to need a “palace,” no matter what the PET results are. If the contract passes Paco’s eye, take it. It says you to me. 😉

Woke up in a panic around 3am wondering how the hell I was going to afford this new place, blah, blah… wondered if I should reconsider before signing the contract tomorrow (which did meet with Paco’s approval after a few minor changes). So I came up with these pro and con lists.
Cons:
150 euros more than what I’m paying now
Central air & heating – more expensive
Coming home at night alone will feel a bit scary
One small bathroom
Pros:
Gorgeous space, lovely terrace
Room for “growth” (office, guest room)
Feels like home
Motivation for new work projects
Nice bohemian neighbourhood (no more tourists!)
Safe for cats (with a few adjustments)
Can shut half of central air vents to save money
Can still go to my gym
Not massive change as just 7 minutes from present home
Looks like the pros win. When I’m feeling strong and optimistic I all for moving forward and know this will be a positive change. But sometimes in the wee hours I am filled with dread and doubt… though I think that’s fairly general and not just related to the new apartment choice. So, time to move forward.

Now _I_ have apartment jealousy!
I reckon you should make the room up as a guest room and post it on http://www.airbnb.com to make up your rent 🙂
We have also chosen a new flat that is the total opposite to ours now. I.E. no character but all the other boxes ticked. Have a look on my flickr.

When are you moving? And where? I already miss your apartment – it really had a very special charm.
I’ve read some disturbing complaints about airbnb… might take in short-term tenants as a way to help out, but I think I’ll just stick to interviewing them here in person. Apparently weathly flamenco students from abroad are all the rage these days!
