I have to either get my 15-year-old machine fixed or buy a new one.
Thank goodness I can use the neighbour’s machine for now…

Oh gee, just what you need, a broken appliance. Glad your neighbor has a machine you can use and hope it is a simple and easily repaired problem.

It’s a dead motor, so it’s either spend 200+ euros to have it replaced or get a new washing machine. Fuck.

I don’t know about there, but here you can pick up a used washing machine for not nearly that much. I’ve done it a couple of times, maybe you can find one that’s not too old.
Good luck! Not worth fixing the old one, I’m sure.

I concur with Beth. Do they have Craig’slist for Sevilla? That’s the kind of place to look for a used one.

There is a Craig’s list for Sevilla, as well as a local buy-sell paper. But two things about buying a used one are that it could be a piece of crap and I have no idea how I would get it here and up three long flights of stairs.
I’m going to call a place about getting a new motor put in, or at least get an estimate. I’ve already had it replaced once (about five years ago) so if it lasts another five years for 200 euros maybe that’s the better option. It’s quite a good brand (Bosch) and I would never be able to buy a new one of the same quality.

Aaaack, don’t even think such a thing, nursemyra! All of the major appliances here are 15 years old, bought by the previous tenant. Though my friend María Paz told me this is a good thing because she says they are usually better quality than the ones you can buy now.

Some good news. After a bit of negotiating with my landlord he has agreed to go halfers with me on a new machine, and I’ll be able to pay off my half in monthly installments.
The only thing now is to find a decent-ish machine for 300 euros (his limit). He says his daughter saw one at this price somewhere, but I’m reckoning it’ll be kind of crappy (I hate it when they don’t spin properly). I had a look at some this morning and saw a couple good ones for 400 euros. If Pepe will go up that high I should be able to manage four monthly payments of 50 euros. So, fingers crossed!

Update! Just got off the phone with the landlord’s daughter. She told me she has this same 300 euro machine at home. It’s a Samsung with a nice large drum and apparently spins dry like crazy, and she said she could order me one this afternoon. So what the heck. Should have it by Friday. Then there will just be three monthly 50€ payments and I’ll have a brand new washing machine.
Well, that turned out better than I thought it would…

Since I am welded to my washing machine due to the large quantities of sheets I must wash on a daily basis, the loss of that particular appliance rates as an emergency situation in this house! I’m glad that you have managed to retrieve the situation so handily.
The last time my washing machine died I went out and bought a new one and the limiting factors were “Can you get it to my house by 1 p.m. this afternoon?” and “How much did you say you wanted for that? I’m paying cash, you know.”

The bottom element on my stove died, again… I am hoping that since the handle is also falling off and the thing is 22 years old, they will finally fork out for a brand new on that isn’t caked with grease (that I cannot remove) from the last tenant who “supposedly” had the place “professionally cleaned” when they left…
