The first & fourth points sort of match me, two and five don’t really apply, and three is way off the mark – though as it happens, I am married to a beautiful lady.

I agree re attractive, what I was saying was off the mark was the “like to have someone to show off” part. Which tends to suggest physical.
And in my case, beautiful covers more than just physical – she puts up with me for a start.

Well, it’s that “He’s/She’s with me!” idea, that in some way you bask in their particular glory because they’ve also chosen to be with you.
I sometimes feel like that when Nog says some really smart stuff on h2g2 … that it also reflects a bit on me and hints at other aspects of ‘az’ that others might not have considered.
So it’s not showing off, per se. Just that ‘reflected glory’ thing at times that comes from being seen as a part of a couple.
