L’Oréal lashed over Penelope Cruz mascara advert
Love that headline. From the article…
It said: “Penelope Cruz was wearing a few individual false lashes inserted into her natural lashes to fill in the gaps in her natural lashes for a consistent standard of lashes.”
A few indidividual false lashes??? Just click on the pic and check it out. I’ve been passing a huge in-store ad showing this photo in El Corte Inglés almost daily and my first impression was – ha! Yeah right, as if any mascara alone could do that. But someone obviously took serious exception and reported it to the Advertising Standards Authority, which upheld her complaint. Well done, I say!
I also love the Fast Food: Ads vs Reality website linked to here at Agency Spy, where I first came across the L’oréal ad controversy.
Which ads particularly bother you in terms of how far they stray from reality?

I’ve been seeing this ad over here and thought the same thing, “those ain’t real, baby…”

Looks like about half a dozen spiders stuck to her eyelids and then spray-painted.
What did you think of the food pics?

Well, I just viewed your food pics. I felt: man, I need to go back to Europe! And: I need gelato! (I pretty much lived on gelato, pizza, and pasta in Italy, but it’s the gelato I miss the most!) Are you getting that nasty heat wave we keep hearing about over here?

Not sure if this is a heat wave, per se – just typical July/August weather.
Anyhow, glad you enjoyed my food pics but I was referring to the ones on Fast Food: Ads vs Reality.

Ooops, sorry about that. Bit of confusion.
Well, those pictures don’t surprise me. The big fast food companies spend tons of money on getting a professional team of food stylists to come in and make the products look as appealing and awesome as possible. Then you go there and some 16 year old is in the back slapping it all together in 5 seconds… We just shouldn’t expect our food to look like it does in the pictures…

I disagree – if huge multi-national corporations are going to flaunt pictures of what their food looks like then it should look exactly like that when it appears on your plate. Or in the case of fast-food joints, in your styrofoam container.
But they count on people in general not giving a fuck and just buying the shit anyhow. Which is what happens.
Likewise with the mascara. I could glob that stuff all over my eyelashes for hours and still not end up with the ‘Penelope’ look.
Frankly, I almost never eat anywhere that has photos of their food – except for Bar Modesto and I have no idea why they do the photo thing as it just makes them look chinsy when in fact they serve quite high quality stuff.
At least the pics on Modesto’s menu look like the food you receive – in fact the actual food looks way better than the menu photos.
