. . . in order to move forward.
But gaaaaaa! it’s awful! And yes I know, I know!!! that it’s all my fault for not doing computer backups on a more regular basis. But unlike with cleaning cat ears it seriously is not one of those things where the anticipation is worse than the reality (au contraire). The reality of backing up stuff totally sucks, especially when there is so much to catch up on. I hearby vow to do weekly backups if once I get finished with this lot.
How often do you back up your computer files?
Do you know, I haven’t bothered backing up my computer since I got it. There’s nothing on here that I need that much, or I can’t locate again if I need it. Computer failure is life’s way of telling you you depend too much on IT systems.

Or else that one shouldn’t own a digital camera?

Now, they are backed up, but that’s a different thing to my mind.

Yeah well, I’ve still got hundreds of original photos to sort out (and so they’re big and not many fit on a CD), which is taking fucking forever. There’s not much other stuff that I back up really. A few work files for English classes and my websites. But it’s the photos that are driving me mental.
The problem is that I didn’t get a system going from the beginning, especially after starting the tapa blog. What a maroon!

I haven’t used it, but I’m told this site does a very good online backup system. You just download a program and it backs up to their internet system automatically every time you change a file. Install once and forget about it type thing.

Um… never. Bad, bad, bad.

whenever my laptop makes a goofy noise – lately, that’s about once a week. ugh… frustrating… maybe we can have communal “back up fridays” where we all vow to drink a lot and practice informational responsibility.

I’ve backed up all my images on to a USB drive. but I don’t backup anything else as I don’t really have important stuff on my computer, apart from my blog.
and the blogs are backed up by the host aren’t they? does anyone backup their own blog when it’s a hosted one e.g. with wordpress?
I would be devastated if I lost a year’s worth of posts

Rebecca, are you also lucky, lucky, lucky? 😉
Having backup buddies is a great idea, daisy. And it is recommended that backups be done once a week (though I’m not sure that I’ll be caught up by this Friday since I’ll have frivolous things to do like work, eat and sleep).
The blogs here are backed up by WordPress, nursemyra, but you can also create your own XML Export file every now and again and save it. You know, just in case the Internet crashes.
But seriously, I read somewhere that in the early days of WordPress blogs would sometimes disappear. Can you imagine??? Eep!

Backing up should be driven by what it would cost (in time and effort as much as financially) to recover whatever you might need in the event of a disaster (especially if you recovering if you hadn’t backed up).
If backing up took hours each week, and the recovery effort was only minutes, then it is counterproductive. If the reverse is true, well then . .
I recommend looking at a product like Drive snapshot (free, I believe) – you can take an image of the machine while it is running, then it can be replaced pretty easily in the event of a disaster.

Thing about the photos is that once they’re gone they’re gone forever, so there really isn’t a time factor issue involved unless the pics aren’t important to you. I’ve learned too late that I need to edit and label every photo as soon as it’s downloaded from the camera. *sigh*
I had a look at Dan’s link and it talks about a 15-day free trial. I mean, once I get over this hump it should only take me about half an hour to do my backups, which is better than paying. Also, I wonder how easy it would be for hackers to get into these cyberspace storage areas.

Agreed – while I have no reason to mistrust the intentions of such a site to be secure – I would have my doubts.

Also – can’t remember having seen the spec of SB, but didn’t he/she/it come with a DVD writer? You’d get much more on than a CD.

Oh well duh! Never even thought of that. And I have all those blank DVDs I bought awhile ago that I’ve never been able to use after giving up on trying to reformat films so I could play them on my old DVD player.
Sheesh, so now he tells me… 😉
