Back in May 2007 //engtech somehow got me started on Twitter. So I set up my page there but never used it because I wasn’t sure what to do with it.
Then I recently noticed that other blog buddies Lori and raincoaster were also ‘twittering’ so I had another look at it today … and I still can’t figure it out. As in, what it’s for. Is there really any point to it?
Maybe I just need more friends on my list?

What did we do before there were cell phones and computers? How did we survive without a mySpace, Facebook, blog, twitter, IM? How did we stay in touch with our friends?

Techies sign up for it because not to indicates you’re way behind the times. Most of them use it in a perfunctory way to tell people whether their football teams are winning and what funny things their cats just did. But you CAN be creative with it.
My first one was “who’d have thought there’d be this much blood!” and it just goes from there.
Did you ever see Big Trouble in Little China? I think of twitter the way old Jack Burton thinks of his CB radio.

I was invited to join twitter by a blog friend. I looked at it but couldn’t figure out just what exactly I would do with it. I don’t feel any urgent need to be connected all the time. I don’t even have a cell phone, and I’m OK about that.

I shudder when I think back to those olden days, hmh. Either sending snail mail letters and waiting two weeks for a reply or else spending a fortune on long distance phone calls. Thing is though, there are getting to be so many ways of staying connected that some of them do seem a bit redundant.
No, I haven’t seen Big Trouble in Little China, Rain, so I don’t understand the reference. In terms of just stating what one is doing at the moment, I think I prefer Twitter over Facebook. I guess it’s a bit like IM-ing with several people at once.
I couldn’t live without my mobile phone, mister anchovy. But that’s mostly because I need people to be able to get in touch with me when I’m out of the house (for work-related stuff). I also like getting text messages. Much less intrusive than a phone call and I can answer them at my leisure.

If it makes you feel any better, I can’t figure out what I’d use Twitter for, either.

Twitter — sounds like someone gossiping up a storm, actually. Which I suppose is what it’s for.
Hmmmm. Couldn’t imagine not having a cell phone now; if I had to go back to using a pay phone, it’s SOL, there’s not many left, conveniently located.

Also, public phone receivers are always covered in ear gack – ewwww!
I’m actually having fun with Twitter, now that I’ve got a few more ‘followers’. Of course, I also have a lot of time on my hands at the moment. I don’t know if I’d keep up as much if I were working full time.

I’ll have to start checking out other people’s followers/following lists, silverstar.
Can people follow you if you don’t approve them? I have two followers on mine that I’ve never heard of. Used to be three but one took himself off once I started finally using the site.
Also, how do you put up links – just copy and paste?
Are smileys possible?
Off to have a look at the jokes . . .

Yes, people can follow you just any old way. I’m following people who’ve never heard of me. When you follow someone they get an automated “Hi So-and-So” message from you, to let them know.
You can just paste links in, but the characters all count, even though they’re converted to tinyURL. Smilies yes, but only text smilies.

And the follower you lost probably thought you were someone else. Happens alot.

And I just got a scoop about breaking news in Toronto from Hez, who follows a photojournalist there. It’s good for stuff like that.

So it’s not just about fluffy nothings. That was an amazing scoop you got there, Rain.
