I finally got around to making Wandering Coyote’s sprouts yesterday … though I substituted bacon for pancetta and added some finely sliced garlic. Nog’s verdict was that they were “palatable” considering they were sprouts. I loved them! But of course I had to make something to go with them, and so …
I roasted this rather chubby free-range chicken…
Along with some carrots & potatoes …
And this was how it all turned out…
We’re going to have left overs for days.
Just as well as I am going to be too busy to cook
… picking up the new iPhone 3G later on today!
Thanks for the sprout inspiration, WC.

You’ll be fiddling with the iPhone for days, it’s been weeks for me with the Touch and I’m still downloading free apps and showing off the iBeer, weather, traffic cameras, iLighter, iLevel and especially Jaadu to friends who would probably live happier lives without being shown. Of course, they are all necessary for work … well, maybe not the beer one.
Cheers!

Washed down with white wine (rueda) and water.
It’s years since I roasted a chicken and I don’t know why. It’s easy, cheap and very nutritious. As well as delicious. And I just love roasted vegetables (got tons of those left over too).
Yes, I expect the iPhone will keep me busy for quite some time. Which is good because I’m feeling in need of a challenge right now. Just got an email from Lizzie with my first set of instructions (to get a biz going) so that will help too.
Uh, thanks for that link (I think…).

Hey Az! What a fantastic meal! I am a huge fan of roasted chickens – one of my favourite things to make for myself, and so versatile! At least you got Nog to try the sprouts; he sounds like a good sport. Glad you liked the recipe and that you had such a great meal!

Fabulous meal indeed.
Even the sprouts were ok, and that’s not something I’d normally say.
Soon be time to go get that iPhone.

Hmm, probably the first posting on the Internet that combines brussel sprouts with a 3G iPhone. 🙂

Nog – how much wine did you have with that meal? Edible sprouts must be delirious ramblings, n’est-ce pas? 😉
…but it sure looks delicious 🙂

Heh, heh …

And kind of like pilling a dog, dq. If you “wrap it in bacon” then Nog will eat just about anything. 🙂

Shouldn’t that be pilling a nog?

That dinner looks fabulous! Wait, wasn’t it healthy too? Free range chicken, mmmm. We love to roast chicken, it is so easy and makes the house smell too good. We stuff a chopped up lemon and some rosemary in the cavity. After you eat this chicken, throw the carcass in a pot with an onion, a couple of carrots and a piece of celery, cover it all with water and boil it for a couple of hours. Strain out the bones and veggies, and you have the most amazing stock for a soup or stew base. You can get a lot of meals out of one chicken.

Oh, I forgot I was going to say that it is quite possible that the folks out there who don’t care for brussels sprouts have never experienced eating them straight from the plant. The brassica family actually does create some sugars in them, but those immediately begin to break down and change when the sprout (or cabbage) is picked. If they are picked, cut, and cooked in short order, the difference in flavor is quite marked.
Of course, this is true of most veggies and fruits, possibly why we don’t even bother to buy tomatoes in the winter around here.

Yes, it was very healthy, hmh. And I discovered that by going to the market I could get a whole free-range chicken for just 50 cents more a kilo than factory farmed ones (at the supermarket they’re almost twice as much).
Before cooking it I filled the cavity with a few large chunks of onion and rubbed under the skin with salt & crushed garlic, and that was it. Will definitely be making stock tomorrow, and will also be roasting more chickens this winter.

I will eat sprouts and roasted vegetables with lavish and even erotic abandon. What is this smug condescension with which so many treat them? Philistines!

That looks pretty much like our Christmas dinner! Roast chicken is delicious, and worth paying a bit extra for organic free range. As for roast veggies…ooh, yum, drool. And I have in my freezer the soup made from the stock and leftover veggies, which will last me the rest of this week.

Yeah, I don’t get it either, Sledpress. I’ve personally never met a vegetable I didn’t like.
It did kind of have a Christmassy feel to it, Bea. But no stuffing. And of course no dessert. I’ve never understood dessert.
You can find the recipe (with pics!) over here, SC. In fact, you’ll find lots of fabulous food porn over at WC’s Retorte – have fun!
