My maine mix calico, when I was a tiny Sled, used to get asparagus but only, alas (that being the culinary climate of the States in those days) from a can. The rule in the house was “the cat gets no tips”: but I gave her mine.
I could listen to that Sunny-purr for quite some time. Now I shall go find my cats and give them wicked goodies to eat (actually, one of them just made an attempted fig-napping…)
I enjoyed hearing your voice too. And actually seeing Azar, since he was invisible during my whole visit last spring!
But seriously, azahar, I believe that your cats love asparagus tips best of all, and that is why they don’t quite finish the pieces. If they can cadge another of the tender sweet tips without actually having to eat the tougher stem, well. . . cadge away!
Thought you would enjoy that, Sled, having once had an asparagus-eating cat yourself. That was actually Azar purring. I was trying to get Sunny to stop licking Azar’s face because it usually goes … lick, lick, lick, BITE. I don’t know why Azar keeps falling for it. Kind of a Lucy/Charlie Brown thing going on there.
“With great taste in veggies.”
Absolutely, alejna. So take that, ian! What do you know about veggies anyhow? After so long in Germany you probably think that bratwurst is a vegetable.
No tomatoes, Beth, though they have been known to eat a bit of broccoli now and then, probably thinking it must be asparagus.
I’m sure Friday will eat asparagus, SS. And speaking of grass, my gardener friend Flor is going to bring me a tray of cat grass next week to put on my balcony. She insists the boys need it to “clean out their systems”. And well, I don’t mind cleaning up after them, but Azar tends to prefer puking where he’s nice and comfy, usually on the bed.
Yeah, I think they do prefer the tips, hmh. It was actually years ago, shortly after I brought Azar home, that I discovered his penchant for asparagus. I had been making lunch and put out a dish of asparagus on the table and went back into the kitchen for the rest of my meal, and when I got back I saw that the little bugger had dragged half the asparagus out of the dish and was happily munching away.
He just has to smell asparagus steaming and he starts going nuts. Much like Sunny does whenever I open a tin of tuna, but the tuna makes more sense.
It’s not just you, nursemyra. The only other human being that Azar has allowed to touch him is Nog, and I think that’s only because we used to share a bed, which is where Azar feels safest. Even then it took almost a year of Azar staying firmly on “our side” of the bed and eyeballing Nog for any suspicious behaviour. And then one day Nog went to pet Azar and – wonder of wonders – he didn’t run away.
Sunny, of course, is a snibble whore and doesn’t care who gives him attention and physical affection as long as they give him plenty of it.
Azar really does the cute thing well, doesn’t he, woo? We didn’t get the “full penguin” pose in the video, in which he sits up on his haunches with his front legs dangling by his sides while he licks his chest. Sometimes I find him clearly posing in completely adorable positions, fully aware of how cute he is looking. He really cracks me up.
Teuchter, I hope you’re not suggesting I go and sniff the cat box …
I love asparagus, myself, but after all these years of not having that “side effect”, suddenly, I get it. Apparently, not everyone gets it but once you DO get it, it never goes away.
Benjamin likes it when I hand-feed him grass in the garden, though he is picky about the sort of grass I feed him. Not too course and not too fine, not too hard and not too soft….
“Azar tends to prefer puking where he’s nice and comfy, usually on the bed”
Benjamin is a quiet puker. I have no warning unless I hear the tell-tale glunking noise he does just before. And he NEVER does it once, so you have to corral him before the second one if you didn’t catch him for the first.
Amber, on the other hand, rarely pukes but when he does, it sounds like he’s been poisoned. This afternoon, I heard him screaming and ran down. He was just being sick but the look on his face is horrifying if you haven’t seen him do it before.
SS — every cat has his vegetable. I have had two that would pull the lettuce from the grocery bag, and one that was queer for mushrooms in his youth (but oddly grew out of it), and I know a scruffy raffish tuxedo cat who is addicted to Hearts of Palm.
Ian — you have clearly been eating the wrong asparagus — or starting at the wrong end? —
Az — we have to come up with a Cafe Press T shirt design reading “snibble whore.”
But asparagus… well Lynxcat just snatched the last crumbles from my bowl of crisps (Hey, they’re organic 😉 ) Lynx actually watched parts of the movie, but looked somewhat confuzzled about the cat(s) he could hear but not really see.
My Jasmine a 5 year old Bengal, can eat an asparagus tip to end in less than 30 seconds. I wonder if it is bad for her? last weekend she was sick, but i think it was a lot of fuss over only a small hair ball, which she never ad before…i just wonder if it was the Asparagus, but i hadn’t given her one in 2-3 weeks prior. Now she will not eat her food w/o a little asparagus. is this bad for her? !!!
Well, the asparagus eating cat I had never was sick off it, but she actually ate tips from tinned stalks of asparagus that were very soft, and wasn’t given much. It might have been the fast gobbling — I’ve had cats who upchucked regular kibble and it was always when they were greedy. If you give her little bits, I bet it’ll be OK. Also, cats are programmed to eat a little green stuff; but when they eat a lot, like outdoor cats eating grass, they will always barf, and it’s how they help hairballs come up. The hairball may have been the deciding factor in that particular upchuck.

Asparagus? A vegetable unfit for human consumption? Anyone who feeds asparagus to cats should be reported to the SPCA.

Hmmm, I’ll have to see if Friday will eat asparagus. I just happen to have some in the fridge.
Your boys are cute, and it surprises me that they eat asparagus. But then again, it is rather grass-like and cats love grass.

Even after 5 years Azar never fails to surprise me with his cute poses, and the way he looks at you with that “Aren’t I adorable?” expression.
And he loves a good snibble, too.
And how does Sunny know when I’m going to have sardines even before I get the tin open?
