The other night I woke up shivering and had to resort to slipping on socks and a sweater to get back to sleep … the next morning I had to finally admit that it was duvet time once again. Luckily I’d taken my duvet in to be cleaned the week before so it was all fresh and fluffy and ready to go. And so I made up my bed with the duvet and kissed goodbye simple and carefree bedmaking for the next few months…
But for now I am quite enjoying this time of still-warm sandal-wearing days and cool but not yet cold nights. I love the feeling of slipping into the cuddly softness of a duvet clad bed, just wearing my light summery nightdress.
In August when it’s 35º in my bedroom at 3am it’s always hard to remember that a few months down the line I’ll be wearing several layers of clothing, plus socks – and two cats! – and still be chilly under the duvet. But that won’t happen until maybe late November so for now I’m enjoying this cosy-comfy duvet feeling and only just needing it.
Adiós summer!
Climbing into a freshly made bed with clean linens has to be one of the best feelings in the world. I always seem to sleep better that first night.
I brought home a silk-filled duvet from my first visit to Beijing. It’s one of the best buys I ever made. It’s very light, doesn’t accommodate dust-mites and works equally well in summer or winter. No matter how cold the weather, once I’m snuggled up under it, my own body heat warms up the space and I’m toasty warm all night. With two bods under the duvet, it’s even warmer 😀

I know… Azar loves sleeping under the duvet in winter.

And I bet he doesn’t snore and f*rt!
Or maybe not as much.

Here it’s snowing today….

Never mind, a week from now you’ll be walking around in a t-shirt. If the weather doesn’t change much (and doesn’t rain!) it should be sunny and about 25º. And the only snow you’ll see will be in Granada, from a distance. I’m so excited about Granada!

I know what you mean about “simple & carefree bedmaking” – I’m still trying to put off duvet day. Getting the quilt into the cover is one of my most hated household tasks.
I have, however, already given in to the electric blanket as I do like to get into a warm bed. This has an all-night setting so if I wake up cold I just reach down and flip it on.

I’m almost the reverse – to me there is something wonderful about getting into a cold bed and feeling it warm up around you.

You’re not the first to think so . . .

MInd you, it does depend on having a duvet you can trust – like Teuchter’s – so that you know you WILL get warm.
Never have liked electric blankets myself.

I HATE that fight with the duvet cover too, Deb! I use a topsheet under the duvet so I don’t have to wash the cover quite so often (also keeps the duvet cleaner).
I’ve never used an electric blanket. Hmmm…

Flannel sheets.

I’ve never seen flannel sheets big enough for a king-size bed here. Good idea, but I actually need to get new cotton sheets first.

I just put my duvet in the washer and dryer and it has come out fluffy every time. I bought it when we lived in New York in 1994. I’ve been washing and drying it at least once a year since 1994 and only just now put it down on the couch for Mom to use during the day and bought a new one.
Environment Canada is forecasting “possible flurries” in Ottawa on Monday.

My duvet doesn’t fit in my washing machine, and I don’t have a dryer, so I have to get it washed & dried at a laundry service place that has industrial size machines. Taking Nog’s duvet in today – he’s clearly made of tougher stuff and hasn’t even needed a blanky yet.
Ooh, flurries before Halloween… not good.

Usually it is just a flurry or two and they melt almost as soon as they hit the ground. In most recent years, we have had snow before Christmas and then over the Christmas Eve we get rain and/or freezing rain and it all melts. Then we get our major snow in the New Year.
