This week’s Friday Foto Finder challenge is “herbs”.
This tired looking selection of supermarket herbs really makes me want to start my own rooftop herb garden. Any suggestions for a novice gardener? I’m mostly interested in basil, parsley and coriander.
Check out what other Friday Foto Finders are posting over here!
I don’t know what is available there, but I should think a good big ceramic pot or two (I mean BIG, like awkward to carry into place) with a drain tray would work. I tried hanging baskets once and it was a disaster. Herbs like it dry (which in Seville shouldn’t be a problem). My biggest goof with them in the past has been too much water. There are lots of basil varieties and that’s one herb where you want to snap up every type you can find to see which one thrives in your space — I find some take off around here while others put out really poky leaves. Rosemary is hard to kill once it takes hold and so is sage, another herb with lots of variants.
Oddly my best herbs have grown in kind of cruddy soil. Rocky and dry seems to suit them.

Those are some wonderful herbs. I’m very partial to the herbs you mention, too. Unfortunately, mine never keep for long if I buy them in pots. 😦 My fff herbs are here: http://allicanblog.wordpress.com/2014/04/08/friday-foto-finder-herbs/

I grow all my herbs in pots – Some herbs – Thyme, Tarragon, Oregano, Marjorum like dryish soils so I keep them in small pots in the sun so they dry quickly after a morning watering. Parsly, Basil, Sage, Chives, Nasturtiums and so on I keep in big pots (30-40cm square) so they retain their moisture. Same with my Rosemary and Lavendar bushes. I’m still learning how to keep water cress growing. 🙂
