It’s hard to tell if they even notice that Loki is gone.
Perhaps because they still have each other.
Cats manage it better than we do. They know, I think — when Taffy was in his last hours and hiding under the couch, Apricat came and sat in front of him and bowed his head almost as if inviting a grooming lick, but also stayed that way for several seconds completely still. When we had to let Lilly go, we let her brother into the room after the vet had left, and he sniffed every corner of the space as if it could tell him what had happened. But after that — it’s like the water closes over something, and they go on. Nickel’s the exception; she began to cry horribly, forlornly for a minute or so at a time every so often, after Fergie died, and still does every couple of days. But they were so bonded in a way I rarely see.
They can teach us, I think. They’re such creatures of the Now. Which also means that when they step on our reading matter or pester for attention, we’re being told to remember that all we have is the Now, and treasure those moments with them, even the annoying ones.
