I’m baaaaack!
Well sorta kinda anyhow. And now I would like to RANT a bit . . .
It all started last week when my internet connection kept conking out for 5-10 minutes at a time. Annoying, but not worth calling the server and raising my blood pressure (which happens every time I call those ‘customer inconvenience’ numbers). Then last Friday afternoon the internet connection went kaput so I had no option but to call.
I was told that since I had changed my ‘Orange product’ from ADSL to ADSL + Calls they had to do a ‘line change’ but it would all be working fine within 24 hours. I asked why they were doing this change now (I had made the change back in October) and of course there was no answer for this. So fine, I finally gave up and decided to check it again on Saturday.
And woo-hoo, my internet connection was back and functioning fine on Saturday morning. Except I suddenly had no telephone service.
I decided to wait until Monday morning to call Telefónica about that since I hardly ever use my landline phone, and when I did they had the problem fixed within about half an hour. But just before that my internet went kaput again and has been that way ever since. The worst part being the daily phone calls to the ‘customer inconvencience’ centres (including the ones made last Friday) and getting a different story/excuse each time. Of course adding injury to insult is the fact that it costs a small fortune to call these ‘902’ numbers and takes at least 5 minutes of marking numbers and identifying yourself before you even get started …
Last night I was sooooo upset after my last run-in with total ineptitude that I sent a very angry fax to Orange, knowing full well it wouldn’t help a jot. But it’s that helpless feeling more than anything else that totally drives me mental and makes my blood pressure soar – knowing that I am dealing with complete robotrons on the other end of the line who don’t give a flying fuck. I told each and every one of them that I work from home and need my internet connection for my business and that every day I was without internet I was losing business and income (well okay, slight exaggeration, but how are they to know). Anyhow, did absolutely no good as the moron on the other end of the line either played dumb (or most likely wasn’t playing) or found something or someone else to blame. The really annoying thing was that every day I was promised that a technician would call me and explain the problem. Needless to say I never received any such call.
And that’s why I posted from the gym this morning. I had totally given up getting the mysterious problem fixed by the weekend. But then a couple of hours ago I said to Nog – ‘May as well make the daily pointless call to Orange just to see what’s not going on…’
And well, I’ll be hornswaggled! There was an actual human being on the other end of the line! And one with a brain in his head! I once again explained that I needed an internet connection at home for my work, that it wasn’t just a case of me wanting to do a bit of surfing or whatever – I really needed internet at home! And he said that since that was the case he could offer me a temporary free 24 hour dial-up connection until I got my ADSL problem sorted out.

And okay, it took about 15 minutes to set up and it’s not as fast as my ADSL connection, but at least I’m connected!!! And I said to my new-found hero Mario – ‘Why the hell didn’t someone offer me this on Monday or Tuesday when I explained that I needed the internet for work???’ – and of course he had no idea. But I asked him to repeat his surname because I really want to send another fax to Orange, saying how this was the only employee out of more than a dozen who actually cared enough to help me.
Meanwhile, although not having internet at home for the biz stuff was a pain (I have a couple of part-time jobs that require me to check on things/answer emails every day) it was kind of interesting not to have the personal-access thang …
At first it was weird. Like a limb missing or something. And not quite knowing what to do with myself at times. But after a day or two it came to feel almost normal! I got more reading done. Also, having the translations to work on took up a lot of ‘sitting in front of the computer’ time. But I did miss checking in on blogs and reading the daily ‘papers’ that I like. And really, just the convenience of having the
at my fingertips.
Anyhoodle, will slowly and gently work my way through the backlog over the weekend … thanks to all of you who missed me (or even noticed me missing) ! 😉
Glad you’re back. I’ll have to tell Shirley to post about her “customer non-service” with a cell phone company. Irritating, isn’t it? Train the telemarketing people that phone you at dinner time to actually be customer service people who can help us!!

This is Dogberts support line. How may I abuse you?
For you withot nerdy teenagers Dogbert is a dog featured in a cartoon called Dilbert, which at least ten years ago was very popular with nerdy teenagers.

Phones always seem to be a great way of mediating hate. Two perfectly human humans on either side of a telecommunications network suddenly end up loathing each other.
I mean…the only reason those people were so useless is because they assume you are scum.
What you can’t see you are free to hate.
Or something.
Maybe.
Glad you’re back though.

Internet withdrawal! You poor dear…
Good to see you’re back (“especially after seeing your face!” Sorry, couldn’t resist).

Ha! I doubt my back (and especially my backside) looks any better than my face, so there. 😛
While it’s good to be back online it’s weird to be using dial-up again. Not only does everything take a lot longer but yesterday I forgot that I couldn’t use the phone while I was connected and couldn’t understand why I kept getting this screechy noise when I tried to check my voicemail – I thought someone’s fax had accidently ‘left a message'(duh).

It’s the internet…resistence is futile. 😉
Dial-up is so miserable, that the only thing worse is no internet at all. I don’t even want to think how much time I waste waiting for pages to load, and I don’t even try to view video.
Someday…DSL!

My new mantra, I think … it’s better than nuthin.
Dial-up really is frustrating, especially after having had ADSL for several years. Still, I haven’t yet heard from Orange that the line problem has been fixed, so it’s quite a good thing that Mario came to my rescue yesterday. Though I half suspect that I will end up being billed for this and then have to go through yet another fight to sort that out.
Meanwhile, carpeing the diem here and wondering if I should take up knitting as something to do while I’m waiting for pages to load.

I’d forgotten how slow dial-up was, too, until last summer when we’d had a construction crew damage our cable lines. Luckily, I had one of those free-trial CDs the dial-up companies send out so I wasn’t billed, but what a pain in the ass.
Welcome back! I was in the process of composing a nice message for you yesterday afternoon, when my boss interrupted me to do some work!

I never did find your lost comment on the Pizza thread but I think that’s because I had more than 200 spam comments and I thought I’d gone through them all before deleting them, but just as I clicked on ‘delete’ I saw I’d only got through page one of four! Sorry about that.
Was just listening to The News Quiz and had to suffer through breaks in the broadcast – usually when something really funny had been said. Ah well, it’s better than nuthin … *grits teeth*

No worries about the lost comment- I’ve logged in and found tons of spam before and certainly deleted stuff I hadn’t looked through. We were only discussing pizza, so it’s not like I’d have forgotten which ones I liked or anything.
But man, it really wasn’t the same without you around. By the end of Monday, I was ready to start tracking down your phone number or something and make sure everyone was OK…
While it’s “better than nothing”, I can understand that “not what I’m used to”, or even “not what I’m paying for” can be quite frustrating. I sure hope it’s all resolved soon!

Dial-up is all I’ve ever had, but I’ll change that one day. In the meantime, I don’t bother with audio or video feeds and so forth. It’s far too frustrating.
But then again – text is what I really like, so I don’t feel that I’m missing out all that much.

I can so relate. I did not realize just how addicted I was to the internet and blogging until our power was out for 6 days. I ended up having to go to the library so I could post.
Glad you are back. I guess I didn’t really realize that you were off line since it happened about the same time we were going through the ice storm and having no power at all.
At least my parents now have THEIR power back and have moved back to their house. Thank god for small favors, they both managed to escape without being murdered, although I was starting to feel close to it a couple of times.

Another big disadvantage of dial-up is that I can’t connect from the laptop, so I’m not reconnected. I haven’t had a backlog this big since, well, ever.

I’ll check that out, FB. Especially as it is now Tuesday evening and I’ve had ‘temporary dial-up’ since last Friday. Grrr…

no worriews! Not sure if it will help. But I follow the advice to the letter and pretty well always get what I want form call centres.
