How has this happened?
Last week I was a happily mal-adjusted internet & intensity junkie, still managing to squeeze in a few basically necessary RL activities here and there … but since I got the new Telefónica service it seems I’m suddenly also hooked on television!
How can this be? And more importantly – where will I find the time for this?
Well okay, I haven’t actually watched all that much TV since last Tuesday, but as I find out more about what is available to watch I find myself thinking about my day in a totally different way … as in, what will I be doing at 5pm today when House is on?
It’s crazy. For about the past 14 years I haven’t thought of my television set as anything other than a means to watch video/dvd films. But now there are actually programmes and films being shown in English!!! and it’s proving too tempting to ignore.
For example, last night Nog & I watched a couple of Simpsons episodes, which was quite fun (trust me, the Simpsons dubbed into Spanish seriously does not work). But then they put on Desperate Housewives – something I’d never seen before – and even though I wasn’t particularly enjoying it, I kept watching. Eep!
Perhaps the novelty will wear off? Maybe there is still hope?
I’ll bet the novelty wears off after a while. We seem to share similar attitudes toward the TV in general- i.e., a means to watch videos/DVDs- but I can totally understand how cool it would be to be able to watch shows in English after not having had the option for some time. Especially the Simpsons! 😀
There are a few critically acclaimed shows, that a lot of people watch, that I avoid simply because I can’t afford to get hooked. Like you- where would I find the time? But who could resist something they hadn’t really had many opportunities to enjoy for over a decade?
Glad to hear the new service is working out well for you. Hopefully you won’t also have to master time travel in order to get things done while enjoying your new programming. 😉

Well, I am dying to see House. Hugh Laurie is one of my all-time faves and I’ve read some very good stuff about this programme. So my first chance to check it out will be about an hour and a half from now. Which has actually made Nog & I plan our afternoon differently than we might have done otherwise.
Unfortunately, we don’t seem to get HBO programmes. So no Sopranos! 😦

Unfortunately, it’s on here at a time when I can’t possibly watch it, but I’ve heard good things about it, too. It certainly sounds like a great premise for a show (I tend to enjoy mystery programs), and from what I hear it lacks the “soap opera” quality that every other medical-based TV show here has. I look forward to hearing what you think… I may need to adjust my schedule for Tuesday evenings, or else program the VCR.

TV must be the best sleeping pill ever invented.
The last week and a half I’ve been extremely tired coming home from work. If I’ve not fallen asleep during dinner I´ve only managed to move me into the sofa in the living room. Dragonprincess watches much more TV than I do, preferably in the zapping mode, which just makes it impossible for me to even grasp what programmes are on air. Quite annoying as well.
Nevertheless, with in 15 minutes I’m asleep and sleep for half an hour at least. What usually wakes me up is either my own snorings or that my head bumps down.
Usually I hardly ever watch TV, mostly use it for my DVDs. Hopefully I’ll gain some energy with the returning sun and will once more manage to read more than two pages before meetin the Sandman.

Have you ever watched the original British ‘Office’ (Ricky Gervais)? Superb telly. His follow up ‘Extras’ is also rather good.

Wouldn’t it be more time worthy to just rent the first and second season of House on DVD? Reserve your live viewing time for the current season.
And with Desperate Housewives? You can skip anything after the first two weeks of the second season, so there’s another time saver… 😉

Very unfortunately, we only seem to get US programmes (other than BBC news). Well, as far as I know anyhow – haven’t checked out all 60 channels yet.
And I’m still trying to figure out how the programming works. It seems there is one showing a week that is the newest programme in the current season. Then during the week it’s either repeats of that programme or older ones. Rather confusing. I think the current House is being shown Tuesdays at 10.30, which is actually a good time for us.
No chance of renting the first two seasons though as it looks like our home-delivery dvd rental place has gone out of business.

Re: Desperate Housewives, they’ve been advertising that the third series is just starting(next week?). What we caught the other night was a special two-part thing that recapped what went on in the first two series. Not really my cup of tea, though it was curious to see Kyle McLachlan again – gosh, he hasn’t aged well, has he?

Gaaaaa!!! Just saw 15 minutes ago that House is coming on in 20 minutes … not quite enough time to whip up spaghetti with garlic chicken and courgette in a creamy pesto sauce – but I’m working on it!

With the service they deigned to provide, I’m not surprized!
I was wondering — do you have libraries in the English language available? It might be possible to borrow tv show DVDs from them…jsut a thought. I borrow DVDs of classic movies from my local library, if I can get my hands on them!

There is a library near us that we have never checked out – it might have some books in English but I seriously doubt it would have any dvd options. Still, you never know …
Yeah, we got our last dvd home delivery a couple days late (as usual), left in the mailbox. So the messenger didn’t pick up the last three we had. Then he didn’t show up at all for the next delivery and several emails and phone calls to MediaXpress have gone unanswered. So I assume they’ve gone out of business. Which leaves us with 6 dvd’s … unfortunately not as good a selection as if they had gone out of business after the last batch we were supposed to receive. Ah well, that’s life. I don’t feel too stiffed since we have the half-dozen dvd’s in return for our last month’s payment.

Hmmm, do you have a university near you? Maybe they have a film school, and you might be able to cadge some dvds from them. Just flailing around for ideas, here…

And I appreciate your flailing very much – thanks! I reckon for the next few weeks we’ll be fine as we have 4 free pay-per-view films from the Telefónica thang that we have to watch within the next couple of weeks, as well as 3 DVDs (and possibly 6 more coming) from the rental place.
So for the next while the ‘problemita’ here at casa az will be finding the time to watch all these films and House.
