So I bought one of these today …
As the weather heats up so do all the furniture surfaces here and I started to worry about the Sexy Beast getting overheated during the course of a long summer day. There were a few different types at Fnac, including one with a built-in fan, and I opted for the simplest model (it’s exactly like the one in the pic) thinking it should allow for enough extra air circulation between SB and the table for the internal fans to do their job properly.
But while I was googling for a thumbnail pic of my coolstand I discovered that there are tons of the kind with fans – like these. And so now I’m not sure if I should exchange the one I’ve got for a fan model.
Any advice?

I would stick with the one you have. Any laptop manufacturer who needs to have a fan under their product should go out of business. The little raising thingy is similar to what I have and it does a good job even on sweltering days. By cooling the components more than without it you are marginally improving their reponse but more importantly increasing their lifespan.

I noticed last night when I turned SB off that she was much cooler to the touch underneath than previously, so I think I’ll stick with this model.
I was doing a bit of online research about the fan models yesterday and came across a similar comment – that good quality laptops shouldn’t need them.
But when it’s 45ΒΊ at casa az I don’t think it hurts to provide a little extra space under the beast for better air circulation.

I think you’re on the right track, az. Some friends have used one of the cool pads with fans, and I don’t think it makes much difference, and the cool pad fans themselves broke!
If it gets *very* hot, place a fan so it blows under the coolstand, or place the computer so the fan can blow under. that should work. π

Well, since the electric fan is usually directed at ME when I’m in front of the computer that means extra airflow already.
And you’re right – the coolpad with a broken fan is useless as it isn’t actually designed to let in more air flow naturally.
I’m really pleased with this cute little blue thing. It makes quite a difference.
