Don’t even remotely need . . . but still want! 
It’s so small and perfect.
So there we were wandering around Fnac yesterday evening, enjoying the air conditioning while I went to pick up a DVD I’d ordered a couple of weeks ago. I can’t say what it is because I still want to surprise Nog, and in any case I didn’t buy it because it’s French and very weirdly had subtitles in about six different languages, including Norwegian, but not in English. But I digress. . .
I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before but Fnac (which has four floors including the ground one) has those really annoying escalators that are set up so you have to go around to the other side to continue going either up or down. Apparently this is a clever ploy to get customers to look at more of their merchandise. Well, it worked yesterday because I wouldn’t have walked by the laptops otherwise and seen this baby.
It really is cool – small and sleek, with a 12″ ‘bright screen’ and quite a comfortable looking keyboard. It weighs next to nothing and would fit into a (largeish) handbag. And it’s got a really groovy feature whereby you can twist and flip the screen so that it lies over top of the keyboard and the screen becomes a touchpad. It has twice the memory of the Sexy Beast and is truly portable. I mean, I love being able to use SB in different rooms at home, but she’s quite heavy and also just too exquisite to take outside and risk getting scratched. The Tablet’s chassis is shiny black and silver – not only gorgeous but also quite indestructable looking.
So now all I need is a good excuse and 1200€ . . .

I’ve just installed a new gadget to my laptop, a wireless ergonomic keyboard.
Still it takes longer time than usual to type, but hopefully I’ll learn to handle it soon.
Wouldn’t mind a lager screen though. I had to push away the laptop some thirty cms to make space for the keyboard and suddenly the screen content is so small.
It doesn’t help putting on the specs either.

Hmm. That hinge doesn’t look very sturdy.
What do we mean by an ‘ergonomic’ keyboard, dq? I presume it’s one of those with the keyboard divided and the two halves angled away from each other so that – provided you’re a proper touch typist – you can type with the wrists in a neutral position.
Arguably, a keyboard that slows you down – and that sort of keyboard will, if you’re not a ‘proper’ typist, is unergonomic.
My advice (and do as I say, not as I do!) would be that whatever keyboard you use, the most important thing is to monitor your posture. Keep the wrists in an uncramped position and especially Drop those shoulders!(Write this down on a post-it and stick it on your monitor. Don’t let those shoulders start to creep up around your ears. Remember to relax!). Plus take plenty of breaks and use the opportunity to gently rotate your wrist, neck and shoulder joints. Also, get your seating right. Use a footrest and wrist rests if you have to. Consider a trackball instead of a mouse. A fancy keyboord on its own won’t help. These measures might.

The hinge looks sturdier ‘in person’, Edward, and probably wouldn’t get that much use…
Ha – listen to me. In fact this is my dream ‘auxiliary’ notebook for my fabulously busy and successful fantasy life – you know, the one where I travel lots and otherwise meet with clients all over the place and so would absolutely need this gorgeous gadget. 😉
It really would be nice to have though, if I could afford it. Actually, just being able to afford it would also be rather nice. . .

How about getting a small table with a slidy shelf for the new keyboard, dq? I’ve got a little IKEA table like that for using SB in the living room – it’s also more comfortable having the keyboard a bit lower than table height. The only time I use the laptop keyboard is when I’m in bed or sitting on the sofa – and that stupid integral mouse drives me mental.

Those pics I found for the HP Tablet don’t really show how small and perfect it is – it kind of looks like any other laptop. It’s really the design of it that has made me so desirous to have one – I love beautifully designed stuff like this.
I think the screen is too small to ever use it as one’s main computer, unless one’s main purpose for having a computer would be to have something totally portable. The whole chassis is very thin and compact and it weighs less than 4 pounds (about 1 3/4 kilos).
I still want it! I just have to come up with a lifestyle that makes it necessary. 😉

Took a trip back to Fnac this morning to see if they had Gregory’s Girl on dvd … they didn’t and apparently can’t even order it for me as it isn’t in their catalogue. 😦
But I did get a chance to drool over the HP Tablet again. Comparing it to the other small ones on offer there is just no comparison! I would never feel even slightly tempted by the others. Ah me!

Went to visit Jupiter again this evening when we were out for a walk (see? I’ve already named him – and have also decided this one’s male … SB is totally female. The desktop – Jaguar – is also male. Go figure).
I honestly can’t understand this almost obsessive attraction – what the main draw is. Whether it’s the beauty of the design or the sort of lifestyle that would require me to own one. Probably a bit of both. *sigh*
