There’s been odd cat behaviour going on at casa az lately.
Some of you may recall the cat fights that resulted from playing a video of fighting cats on my computer – gosh, almost a year ago now. This ended up with my two boys – previously best mates – becoming territorial enemies and not being able to be in the same room together for almost six months. Since then they seem to have calmed down and have accepted each other again, though they still don’t snuggle up together like they used to.
During the cat fight period Sunny was the aggressive one, though most of the time he seemed as scared as Azar when he would suddenly attack – almost as if a button had been pushed and he was doing it against his will. So I was very relieved to see them finally getting along together again and even play-fighting from time to time (without a horrible battle ensuing).
But about two weeks ago this started changing again. I noticed Azar starting to pick more serious fights with Sunny, approaching him while he was asleep and behaving in an ‘in-yer-face’ threatening manner, and I thought … wtf?
I really don’t get it. I mean, Azar seemed like the ‘victim’ all throughout the ‘pee wars’ and so appeared to be quite content later on when things settled down again. But it’s like there’s a role reversal happening, which is really stupid on Azar’s part because Sunny outweighs him by almost 2 kilos and also has the use of both his front paws and claws (Azar’s left front leg looks like this). In fact, the other day Azar had a huge gash over his left eye from one of these spats (that he’d started!) so I honestly don’t know why he has started behaving like this.
Any ideas?

how about painting the kitchen?
oh you mean an idea about cat behaviour?

Painting the kitchen sounds like A Very Bad Idea.
At the moment the two boys are both snoozing on their respective “beds”, no trouble at all. I think the spats are territorial in some way, but I don’t know what to do to prevent them.

That pic of Azar was taken when he was about 6 months old (he’s 12 years old now!) but it was the only one I could find that shows his little bendy ‘hockey stick’ paw. And yes, he is totally gorgeous.
Sunny is due for a check-up and blood test (he’s been on a daily supplement for his kidneys), so I’d like to do that soon in case he is ill and Azar is picking up on this.
I remember when Lua was ill the two boys would often gang up on her, as if her being in a weakened state was a bit like a red flag to them.

Oh, and painting the kitchen is mostly A Very Bad Idea because we have floor-to-ceiling ceramic tiles … though I guess the ceiling could do with a lick of paint, especially after I set a pot of boiling something-or-other on fire awhile ago (really can’t remember WHAT) that turned my pretty white kitchen quite black and smoky. Mostly we just don’t look up at the kitchen ceiling much these days …

I have no clue as to what is going on. My boys hang together a lot. Even though Mike is bigger than Smokey, Smokey definietly has the upper hand as far as being the dominant cat. About two years ago, Mike kept trying to see if Smokey was “bigger” than him, but finally gave it up as a bad job. Now, if Smokey is out by himself, Mike feels he has to go out there and be his backup. Smokey is definitely getting older and weaker now. I do not expect him to live through this winter, and Mike is very sweet, going out late at night to check on him and make sure he gets home safe.

floor to ceiling tiles? I’m having trouble picturing that (hint hint).
are they all plain or do you have some really cool spanish style arty ones scattered amongst them?

Just plain white tiles, matte finish. But I think they look very pretty.
Got cool hand-painted ones in the stairway though.
