This is in response to comment 6 on this post.
It was suggested by nursemyra that I could tell about how Nog & I met as part of NaBloPoMo , and then I thought that it would be fun if other people also shared their ‘how we met’ stories. So here is mine and I look forward to reading yours . . .
The story begins sometime in February 2003. I was in a bookshop looking for something interesting to read and came across The Salmon of Doubt by the late great Douglas Adams. I remember being quite surprised at the time because I didn’t know he had died until I read the book’s back cover. And so, over the next few days while I was reading I kept coming across references to h2g2, a website started by Mr Adams which was meant to be an a guide about Life, the Universe and Everything (a guide that previously only existed in his wonderful trilogy in four parts, The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – or ‘h2g2’ ). I finally checked the place out and started participating on a few conversation threads, one of which was called ‘God – Fact or Fiction?’. And a couple of days later I got a message on my personal page from a guy called Noggin.
So that’s how we first ‘met’ on Nog’s 50th birthday … and little did he suspect that his life was about to change. 😉
Actually, it didn’t change all that quickly. We were friends on h2g2 for almost two years, and had also moved on to IM chats and phone calls, before Nog decided to come to Sevilla (in August 2004) for a holiday and to finally meet me in person.
And well, he’s still here. 🙂
I’ve often thought about how different my life would be today if I’d never bought that book back in 2002. It’s almost scary how so much of what’s happened to me since then hinged on that one purchase, how it might not have happened. And I’m so glad it did.
Okay … your turn!
Life is all coincidences.
It also happened that at the beginning of 2004 I was made redundant, and had a lump sum of cash at my disposal. Without that I would probably never have moved to Sevilla.
It’s actually rather scary when you stop to think how many things happen in your life over which you don’t have much control. But then, things often turn out for the best anyhow. Like this time.

that’s such a romantic story. I love it!
stephen and I met online too – back in 1999. but as we both lived in the same city there was no travelling to be done. not then anyway.
we did a lot of travelling together in 2001. and we talked about going back to paris just before he died.
this is not intended to be a sad post. I like remembering the travelling. and I liked reading Nog’s comment too

Yeah, it is a nice story, isn’t it? And yes, it was very serendipitous that Nog had no ties and also some cash when he came to visit. The UK government had closed the post office in his shop about 8 months earlier and it was no longer viable for him to keep the place running.
I didn’t know you met Stephen online, nursemyra – cool! It’s a shame you didn’t get back to Paris, but you’ll still ‘always have Paris’ with him. *hug*
‘Expect the unexpected’ is right up there with ‘carpe diem’ … good words to live by. Hello and welcome, thoughtbeans! 🙂
*waves to sulz* Long time no see.

Hmmm, to be pedantic, the trilogy ad a fit of increasing inaccuracy and ended up in five parts 😉
Mrs SG V and I go back to the university days – a laboratory romance of sorts. Actually, we met at a 3-weeks full-day training course in, how romantic can it be?, inorganic chemistry. Nothing sparks love like watching copper sulphate crystals grow?
Rather, I somehow ended teasing the life halfway out of her during these days, coupled by the fact that my work mate and I came in shattered from partying most mornings, existed by caffeine and went to the earliest lunches of the whole bunch. And yet finished all the exercises first. I still am not quite sure how I ever ended on the good side 🙂
Anyway, we spent a year where I was very interested – I’m sure she knew – yet we were “just friends”. Until one Saturday at a common friend’s party where our hands started holding 🙂
That’s *count fingers, takes off shoes and socks to include toes and still come up a little short* years ago 😀
(liked the ‘always have Paris’ remark!)

That’s so cute, SG V. And you’re right, it was a trilogy in five parts – oops!
I had no clue that Nog fancied me for ages and then one night we were IM-ing and I was fretting about money as I was in rather dire straits at the time. A week later I got a brown bubble envelope in the mail with no return address, no note … just ten crisp 100€ notes inside. Of course the stamp from Wales gave it away. So I called Nog and he said he was just in a position to help and I said – ‘no way, you fancy me, don’t you???’ – and he finally fessed up. 🙂
I wouldn’t just be without Nog if I hadn’t bought that book. There are so many wonderful people I’ve met through h2g2, including a few I’ve also met in person. Some who stop by here are SV G, Big Bad Johnny P, zoomer, Steve & Sara, alji, Fanny, Arnold, dragonqueen, hmh, Edward, Dan, Anneke, Taliesin, Woodpigeon and spacecadette.
Definitely the best 15€ I ever spent.

It’s a lovely story. And you two are definitely the best h2g2 couple! 🙂

Is that a compliment, Dan? 😉
Speaking of the friends from h2g2 that I’ve met in person – here they are.
And of course there was zoomer’s magical mystery tour.

The story of how Jim and I met is so long and complicated I cannot even remotely put it in a comment. However, I am inspired by your story and I will be writing a post on this very subject tout suite.

How we met….
Um, I’ll come back when I really can talk about some real person than my computer, until then I’ll wait. But it does allow me to use Arnold’s line –
I’ll be back! 😀

Okay. I made my post about How We Met today. Hope you enjoy it. I may make the next post another one of the series on Breaking UP and talk about what happened right after Sis dumped Jim. That could be amusing in the extreme. Probably defamatory, though.

That’s a great story, hmh. I suppose you could always make the ‘follow up’ post password protected. 😉

Um, I usually predict it will be sometime after the human species self destructs itself and become fossils. Now do you want THAT to happen “soon”. 😛

Oh now, this is quite funny, in a tragic way.
We met in a pub. Now, that in and of itself will suprise no one who knows either of us, but it is a little better than that.
My mate, let us call him A, turns up on the doorstep one day and says ‘Wanna come down the pub?’ Hmm, I sez, isn’t tonight the night you’re supposed to be meeting B and his girlfriend C, who are introducing you to her best mate SLG? Sounds like five might be a crowd.”Yeah, but I’m really bad at that of thing and need someone to talk to if it goes badly.’ ‘OK, thou weak willed goit.’
A good evening was had by all and me and SLG ended up going to see the mighty Ben Harper the following evening. She blames the tequilla. I blame the zips on her combat trousers.
The funny/tragic bit is that B and C went through a very bitter and long seperation last year (right over christmas), only for C to end up marrying A this summer. We’re still very friendly with B but don’t hear a damned thing from A and C, even through Sara’s illness. And we tried so very hard not to take sides.
