Edge is an online thinktank whose informal membership includes some of the most interesting minds in the world. Its mandate is to promote inquiry into and discussion of intellectual, philosophical, artistic, and literary issues, as well as to work for the intellectual and social achievement of society.
Their annual question for 2008 is:
What have you changed your mind about? Why?
When thinking changes your mind, that’s philosophy.
When God changes your mind, that’s faith.
When facts change your mind, that’s science.
How about you? How have you changed gears this past year and why?

By the way, I’m still thinking about my own answer(s) to this question, but it would be great to hear some of yours.

Yeah, it’s a much more difficult question to answer than I’d originally thought …
I think in terms of serious global issues I haven’t changed my mind about anything in particular.
On a personal level, I’ve come to realise that trusting someone is a relative thing. When it comes to frienships it seems that many people have a rather fluid concept of honesty … which has always left me wondering who I could actually trust. So I think I’ve changed my mind about the idea that you can ever truly trust anybody. Which may not sound very positive, but in fact it’s a bit of a relief.
My need to trust is basically my problem. The reality is that you can usually trust most people up to a certain point and in different ways and you just have to accept that. And I actually feel quite fine about changing my mind about this.

az – love this question, and it’s difficult. not just because i live in a country where the commander in chief is incapable of changing his mind – regardless of scientific fact (and nevermind changing his mind because of philosophy, because he doesn’t actually think, either)… i’m going to have to give this some thought. like you, i can think of personal examples. for example, changing my mind about going out into the blogosphere – i’d been considering it for years but jumped over the broom on 31 Dec 07 (so technically it WAS last year). Hmmm…
