So okay, I’ve had this microwave oven for about 5-6 years now. And the other day while I was making some popcorn I heard an extra loud POP and it turned out that the spinning plate had exploded. Um … why? Is it normal for a plate to explode like this? Has this ever happened to you?
I’ve since found a place where I can buy a replacement plate, but because of the stupid Feria I won’t be able to pick it up now until Monday. Which means I will have been without a working microwave for a week!
All of which has made me realise how much I depend on my microwave for those few small but significant things in my life. I mean, I never actually ‘cook’ food in the thing. In fact, I only ever use it for making popcorn, reheating coffee and defrosting stuff. But I didn’t realise until this week that those things are almost daily occurrences at casa az.
What do you use your microwave for?
i used to jokingly refer to this particular appliance (or the act of cooking food in it) as “microwaves” – ie: “I’m going to cook that in my microwaves oven”. Technically, we use much more than a single wave, therefore it should be plural.
people said i was a geek, so i quit. but i use the shortwave oven for nearly all of my alleged cooking. i’d be aggravated without it!

Being only a geek-in-training, as well as an
annoying pedantEnglish teacher, I have to point out that ‘microwave oven’ is actually correct. Kind of how you don’t say ‘shoes store’ or ‘books shelf’. But of course you knew that.Someone on h2g2 told me that she’s broken several plates and they always broke while making popcorn.
Oh nooooooo!

This is a Sign That Not Can Be Ignored.
Your popcorn habit is getting addictive… maybe there is a PA* around?

It’s the admitting to the existence a ‘higher being’ that always stumps me with these 12-step programmes, dq… 😉
And why 12 steps? For me it would be just the one.

I only use mine for reheating leftovers and coffee. Nothing has exploded. Yet.
Addicted to popcorn? A more benign addiction I can’t think of.

You can use the microwave oven without the spinning plate, can’t you? Or is it setup so that it won’t run? You may want to stop things and manually rotate their position, but it should still work.

OMG! I never even considered that, Arnie. Yes, it runs without the spinning plate. I just thought it was necessary, though I suppose it is mostly to keep the heat even while ‘cooking’.
I’ll try some popcorn later on and let you know how it works. To be honest, the popcorn bag always stops spinning after it opens a bit anyhow, because it gets stuck on the walls.

People think I’m a freak…but I haven’t owned/used a microwave oven since 1990. Gave the one I had away when I moved, ’cause I found I was only using it to quickly ‘bake’ a potato, or heat a cup of water for tea.

our microwave functions as a pantry because our kitchen has about 3 cabinets. actually using the microwave for cooking requires whole minutes of pulling assorted foodstuffs from the inside, cluttering the counter with the contents, and then microwaving whatever needs heating. we’ve found it’s just easier to a. eat things cold, or b. eat out. but hey, that’s just us.

That doesn’t sound any more freakish than me mostly using my microwave to reheat coffee, Lori. I have a french press so the coffee doesn’t stay hot for very long.
Hello and welcome to casa az, curlywurlygurly (um, cwg for short?). I have a ‘dishwasher pantry’ like that – it was here when I moved in and I’ve never used it as a dishwasher, but it’s handy for storing stuff.
I was thinking of looking for one of these microwave popcorn poppers (though I’d still have to get my popcorn ‘muled’ in).
