In case any of you were feeling envious…
This is an iPhone screenshot taken early yesterday morning (martes) by a Twitter friend who lives in Sevilla. I actually don’t remember a time when it went below freezing here, though it probably has. But yesterday I woke up with the thermostat in the bedroom at 12ºC (brrrr) and I had to literally dust off my winter coat to go out – I don’t think I wore it at all last winter. But at least yesterday was sunny. The forecast for the rest of this week looks rather dire and I don’t like my chances of getting the laundry to dry.
Well, at least I’m not in Deadmonton!

It was around fifty Fahrenheit today and the sun broke through the morning fog. Pretty.

Look, if you live in Edmonton you have no excuse for being in ignorance of what the temperature gets to. We used to watch the new freshmen from Outside during the fall semester up at UofAK Fairbanks, and see how fast they threw on their cold weather gear. If they were wearing their down parkas when it was only 20 degrees F, we knew that they would be gone after Christmas break, transferred out to someplace warmer. You had to learn to layer clothes and save the down parkas for the last layer.
Anyway, it is colder than the proverbial witch’s pectoral appendage here, having opened the morning at 8F (that would be -13C note the minus) and after a nice sunny but slightly breezy day, it is now clear up to 22F (that would be minus 5.5C) and the sun is going down. I have been baking cookies (again) this time they are the vanilla crescents (an almond/vanilla shortbread) and ginger cookies. So far we have burned about fifteen pieces of oak in the stove, and will probably put another six or so in before the day is through. Keep warm!

I’m from Minnesota and I’ve family in Maine. We are not a cold averse folk. My current location on the map is too hot and humid for me.

One year during Ottawa’s Winterlude, this school group visiting from somewhere in the US wrote and complained that they “weren’t warned about how cold it was and someone should have told them before they came up here”.
I mean… 1) WHO comes to Canada in the winter and doesn’t know it is cold? 2) surely to GOD they have atlases and encyclopedias at their school and would think it worthwhile reading up on someplace before they go there…

-3 C going down to -7. It will hover between 5 and -11 for the next few days at least. Our snow is long gone, but it is weather for the wood stove, particularly at night.

It is a warm 39c here in Adelaide. When we lived in Sevilla I only remember it getting down to 0c once in the five years we were there. The only reason I remember is that the water in our pipes froze. At least they didn’t burst.

I remember all those “-40º, or -50º with the windchill” days when I lived in northern Manitoba. Temperatures like that are obsene.
As long as I’m bundled up and walking outside I don’t find winter temps here too unpleasant. But when I’m AT HOME and it’s only 11ºC in my bedroom (like now – wow, I think that’s a record indoor low) it’s pretty damned uncomfortable. I’m wearing three layers and a scarf and am wrapped up in a big duvet … it’s mornings like these that make it hard to get to my 8.30 yoga class.
And now a whole week of rain to boot. Luckily I have plenty to do inside to keep me busy. And this evening I have my class over at Agustín’s, so I can enjoy an hour and a half of lovely central heating.
Once in five years, Maya? Yeah, that sounds about right. Nog & I went out for a drink last night “to warm up” and found this very cosy & VERY WARM bar just around the corner. I wanted to move in.

-11C and sunny today! Sun has been scarce the last month and a half. Predictions for tomorrow says -13C.
Well, the days are short now. Sunrise today was 09.24 and sunset was 13.46. It’s dark like 19 hrs a day now. As m,uch as I like the white nights I abhor the black days. Especially when it’s cloudy you feel like you’re constantly sleepy.

Moved the bedroom heater into the livingroom this morning. Since I removed the bedroom door last summer it doesn’t make sense to put the heat on in there, and the livingroom heater broke last winter. So things are slowly warming up here … it’s almost 19ºC now.
