Seems it ain’t over till the fat lady sings.
Yesterday I got a call from the Defensa Felina volunteer (Livia) who has the kittens in her house. She said that she was taking them to the vet’s for a check up and to get the chip put into Tapita so I could take him home this week. And although I had already decided (or so I’d thought) that I couldn’t take him because of the FHV, I decided to at least go and talk with the vet and ask her advice. Afterwards I checked with two other vets and it looks like I might still be able to adopt this little cutie, just not as soon as I’d wanted to…
The vet was honest and told me that all three kittens had had some sort of virus, probably a combination of Feline Herpes and Feline Calicivirus, and also said that they had been in pretty bad shape when Livia first brought them in. The two larger kittens are totally cured of their symptoms now, it’s just Tapita who is still a bit congested and still has slightly weepy eyes. The vet said that within a week he should be fine. Of course all of these kittens will remain carriers for the rest of their lives, but unless they have an outbreak they won’t become contagious. And even then, it wouldn’t necessarily mean that any cat they had contact with would end up infected.
Where does that leave me and Azar? Well, all three vets I talked to said that before I even think of bringing another cat – any cat – into the house I’d need to get Azar vaccinated first. Duh. I’ve never vaccinated my cats because they never left the house, but in retrospect it really should have been the first thing I did before even starting to look for a kitten. So I am taking Azar in for a vaccination today because, even if I don’t end up taking Tapita, it is the prudent thing to do.
And so … Tapita is now chipped (I watched the vet doing it – eep!) and will stay at Livia’s place with his siblings for another week or so. The other tests (for leukemia and auto-immune) can’t really be done till Tapita is at least three months old, as the results wouldn’t be reliable until then. And he also won’t be able to be vaccinated for a few weeks. But there’s no real risk of him catching anything from Azar – it’s the other way round – so after Azar gets his shots then the risk factors go down considerably.
This is good news. Especially after holding Tapita again yesterday at the vet’s and he immediately curled up in my arms and went to sleep (just like Indira – what is it with me and kittens?), and after seeing his little face again. So this is what we are going to do. And okay, if another perfectly healthy and amazing kitten shows up in the next week or so, maybe I’ll feel safer going that route. But I think I’d like to give Tapita a chance, especially now I know that having him at home won’t pose a scary health risk to Azar.
Thanks again to zoomer for pointing out the risks involved with FHV and FCV. It was stupid of me not to immediately get Azar vaccinated when I decided to look for a little friend for him. But that will be taken care of today. Soooo not looking forward to taking him in. Ever tried putting the Tasmanian Devil into a cat carrier?
Stay tuned…

I was so hoping they’d be able to solve the problem with a couple of vaccinations. It sounds like it’s possible now. Oh I hope. He is a total cutie.

Me, too, hoping it all works out well. I’m sure it will.
… just as long as you can get Az in the carrier and to the vet, right? 😉

One of our cats, Jerry (the best cat you’ll ever meet) came to us with FIV. I don’t know the difference between that and the other viral letters, but it was decribed to us as feline AIDS. We’ve had him, living with our other cats, for about 8 years now. He only has 4 teeth and he has a heart murmur but overall he’s done very well and as near as we can tell, none of the other guys ever got infected.

Good ol’ Jerry. But all your cats are vaccinated, right? Since they’re indoor/outdoor cats. I’ve been reading about Feline Herpes and Calicivirus, and the possible scenarios can vary quite widely. It could be that Tapita will never have another outbreak again, or he might end up like the poor cat zoomer described, with chronic health problems. But I reckon that on his Hill’s kitten food diet and comfy warm surroundings (and daily snibbles), he should thrive and become fairly robust.
Azar is certainly robust, with the shiniest coat and bright clear eyes. So I hope that, even though he’s an “old man” now, he won’t end up catching anything from Tapita. Heck, for all I know, he’s already had these (from when he was living in the street) and has built up a natural immunity. We shall see…

I’m so pleased there’s a way round this.

One hour until my Tasmanian Devil moment. Sipping green tea after yoga class and trying to get zen about this … have yet to figure out if going to the vet’s is more traumatic for Azar or for me. It sure feels like ME.
The vet said I should wait a couple of weeks after getting Azar vaccinated before bringing Tapita home. That feels so LONG. Maybe if his symptoms have all cleared up by next week it would be safe enough then.
The thing that bothers me about the cat shelter people is that when I was over at the house and playing with the kittens I specifically asked if what they were being treated for was in any way contagious – and I was assured that it wasn’t. Likewise at the shelter itself. Lots of sneezing cats there and nobody said anything about it. It seems very irresponsible for the shelter volunteers to withhold this information.
And it just goes to show that even the healthiest looking cats (like Tapitas siblings and Indira) aren’t necessarily disease free. So I’m glad I’m getting the vaccination thing done – or rather, I will be once it’s done and we’re back home again.

And … done!
OMG you should have heard the racket he made all the way there. I thought the taxi driver was going to boot us out. But he was good as gold with the vet. She gave him a quick check up, trimmed his back claws (oops), assured me his ears were perfectly clean and fine (I was worried his old ear infection was back) and said that for his age (15 in April) he was in fine fettle. He weighs in now at 4.9 kilos, which the vet said was a good weight for him to be. A little chubby, but still healthy. The only surprising news was that he is starting to get cataracts! I hadn’t noticed them here at home, but you can see them under the bright doctor’s lamp. But again, I was told this was perfectly normal for his age and that they aren’t too bad yet. His teeth are in very good shape, the inside of his mouth looks nice and pink, and he has no anal gland issues. So, a rather glowing report!
Then she gave him the vaccination, which covers all the common respiratory diseases plus leukemia and a couple of others. So he and Tapita should be good to go as flatmates in about two weeks.
After another slightly less traumatic taxi ride (I think Azar knew he was on his way home) he came bounding out of the carrier as soon as I opened the door, raced through every room in the flat chirruping like a maniac, then leapt up on the bed and assumed the snibble position. And he’s been almost crazy happy since – demanding food and attention and wanting to play. You’d never know he wasn’t just a big kitten himself.
I can’t wait to see him and Tapita tearing around the place together. 🙂

So okay … while I was writing that last comment an email came in telling me I had just received a paypal donation. Wow. This came with a note saying it was for vet bills and whatever else might be needed. I am blown away. In fact, Nog just came over to ask me why I was crying (don’t worry – definitely happy tears!)
And so, aside from today’s vet bill and taxis, I reckon this will also cover the Hill’s kitten food I bought last week (a good two month’s supply) … and maybe even a cat tree!
Thank you so much, dragonqueen. And please accept the honour (I know you will think of it as such) of being named madrina to both Azar and Tapita, along with Sled and Archie (well, Archie is a padrino, of course).
These have to be the luckiest cats ever!

Honey, if it wasn’t for you Tapita would be here now, Azar wouldn’t be vaccinated, and who knows what the hell might have happened.
Thanks you again for your timely info about the cat viruses. *smooch*

Whew. What a saga. I’m so glad that Azar is vaccinated and home, happy. Tapita will be there soon, and then we will be graced with all the wonderful kitten pictures we so desire.
I am so glad that you have madrinas and padrinos available to you, I would be one if we weren’t scraping the bottom of the barrel every month. Someone said the economy is improving but I certainly don’t see it. We have about 25% unemployment in our county, I don’t know how people are keeping it together. What is saving us is that we have no mortgage on our house. Jim is looking for a job but no joy yet. I’m still saying “There is more than enough money” and while it is true it is not pouring down around us. . .
Smokey is still hanging in there, as demanding and judgmental as ever.

I know the economy is totally sucking the big one for a lot of people now. And I also know that you are a spiritual madrina to the gatitos …… meanwhile! It looks like some of my pig-headed diligence might start paying off soon.
Remember when I said I needed time to focus? Especially back while I was on chemo last summer? And people so generously gave me that time with their donations? Well, I have not been idle. Sure, I have not had much work since then either, except the work I’ve been doing all day every day trying to organise my various projects. And it honestly looks like it might be starting to pay off!
I’ve been getting some very positive responses showing interest in my tapas tours and Seville day tours. If this keeps up I may end up having to hire staff!
Of course, first I need to get my first booking…

oh, I’m am so glad this is coming together, Az – I’d no idea Azar was already almost 15. That’s a fine age to get to for a formerly street kitten!
