Well, those old ones have served me well, but as you can see they are literally falling apart. The fashion these days is for super-big sunglasses but since mine are prescription I just looked for frames I liked and had the lenses tinted. You too?
Nah, I don’t wear prescription glasses most of the time so my sunglasses are always a lá Target. I had a pair of expensive sunglasses and lost them after about a month. That’s generally how long I keep my cheap ones, unless I don’t like them. Then I never seem to lose them fast enough.
Thanks – I love them! If you click to enlarge the collage you can see that behind the red the back of the frames is purple, which makes for a very cool effect when they are out in the sun.
Those are really beautiful! Alas, I have to get new lenses because of the precipitous change in the vision (the Shingles thing) in the right eye so won’t be able to afford new sunglasses for some time.
I think this time, though, I will try for something a lot more snazzy than I have at the moment. When I got these frames, my optometrist had a wide range of frames…. all of which looked pretty much the same. I want something with neat colours, this time.
I got new lenses in my regular glasses a couple of years ago, because they were all scratched up. I probably won’t change those ones because 1) I only use them for watching tv or at the cinema and 2) I’ve never found any frames I like better.
Can you get clip-ons for your new glasses? At least until you can afford new sunglasses. I’m sure you must need sunglasses for driving. My eyes are so sensitive to light that they actually hurt when I go out in the sun, so I wear my sunglasses pretty much every day, even more than my regular ones.
My glasses came with clip-ons. I accidentally put a deck chair on the first pair when they fell out of my purse pool-side last year. They were scratched and bent and although we managed to bend them into something resembling the correct shape, I bought another pair at no small price and lost them during the move. I put them on the kitchen counter in the old house and never found them again. So I went back to wearing the first pair which were scratched.
I lost those when I was cataloguing an abandoned cemetery and Mom “helpfully” dragged my purse out of the car when she got out instead of simply telling me she wanted to get out so I could lock the car up… not that anyone would have been able to steal anything since we were 10 feet from the car on a completely deserted stretch of highway and anyone driving up would be easily seen…. I searched through the entire graveyard (which was tiny) and didn’t find them. Ironically, earlier in the spring, in another abandoned cemetery I found someone else’s clip-ons which were identical to mine.
The story is that about three weeks ago I got a suprise paypal gift from a friend (JM – he can identify himself if he likes) and it was around that time that the plastic covering on one of my sunglass arms just crumbled and broke off… so I decided to use this gift to get myself some new ones. After going to pretty much every optician in town I went with these Hermes Govantes frames and got my eyes tested. The guys said my prescription hadn’t changed much, but I sure notice a difference when I’m wearing these new glasses. Everything is much sharper – very nice.
But when I picked them up on Friday and wore them out for lunch with Nog I was sure they were much darker than I’d asked for (I’d ordered Grey B lenses). So I brought them back in the evening and was told they were definintely Grey C and that they’d change the lenses. You can see how dark they were in this pic, taken during lunch.
Anyhow, went to pick up the glasses up yesterday and – yep – they were too light. So I’ll be bringing them back tomorrow to darken them up a bit. I like the look of them being this light but I noticed yesterday afternoon that they aren’t quite dark enough to keep me from squinting in the sun.
Well they should end up with “inbetween” lenses tomorrow. More like the ones in the old glasses.
Yeah, that was taken after lunch – by then the sun had shifted and the menu written on the window cast shadows on our table. I also included that pic in that restaurant’s Sevilla Tapas page.
Those are some styling sunnies. It’s funny, I couldn’t leave the house without sunglasses in Spain, the sun hurt my eyes. Here, even thought the sun seems a lot stronger–we burn a lot easier–I don’t wear sunglasses as often.
Curious. For me it’s everywhere. I even wear sunglasses on cloudy days here, because often it is still very bright and I find myself squinting.
I quite enjoyed that when I went to the supermarket wearing the new shades yesterday that I didn’t have to take them off – and I could read all the aisle signs and posters! But this actually makes them useless as SUNglasses, so back to the shop mañana.
I have very bad form with sunnies. They have to be prescription so they cost a fortune and I’ve lost two pairs in the last two years.
First pair got knocked off me by a wave in St Lucia on the first day of our hols, back in 2007. Crushed to smithereens. Spouse was very cross that I’d worn them in the sea but I wanted to SEE! Thankfully got insurance money for those as hotel security were involved in the search for them!.
Replacement pair slipped out of one of the many baby bags one has at a ‘we all had our babies at the same time’ get-together in a field (don’t ask) and were never seen again. Actually I blamed Spouse for that one so we’re even. Erm…
I’ve now sprung for a third pair within three years. They are big so that the sun stays out but they’re trendy, by RedorDead 🙂
It’s really crazy with prices, and I wasn’t kidding when I said I’d been to every optician in town. In some places the lenses cost more than the frames! But the place I found these frames was having a special offer that included anti-reflection clear lenses. When I asked if this would also include sunglass lenses I was told no, that it would cost extra. So I walked away, but I couldn’t get these frames out of my mind, and the next time I went back (having decided they were the best I’d seen) I was told there would be no extra charge for the prescription tinted lenses – BONUS.
I remember hoping I’d lose my old ones for ages, so I would have an excuse to buy new ones, but no such luck.
My newish ones look a lot like your old ones. 😉
Your new ones are very cute!

I don’t think I’ve ever lost a pair of sunglasses. Been wearing prescription since I was about 26.

I like very much that last picture as well — the words’ shadows is quite a cool effect 😎
