Maille dijon mustard is a staple here at casa az and I always have three varieties in my fridge – originale, l’ancienne grainy and bordeaux classic. Or so I thought! The other day I was shocked to find I was totally out of the original dijon, and even more shocked after various trips to different supermarkets when it seemed that there must be a Spain-wide shortage going on. Sure they had several other varieties, including a couple I hadn’t tried before, but really, what can take the place of the original? After my fourth attempt at finding some I decided to go for one of the other “flavours” and chose the green peppercorn dijon. And my world changed. Have you ever tried this stuff??? It’s amazing! Words actually fail me, so I’ve opted for a photo (with a bit of pale green “dijonaisse” shown there for tonight’s tortilla) … not sure if it will ever take the place of the original but it was a happy day that I discovered this stuff.
What’s been your most recent culinary discovery?
I love mustard! I’ll have to try the new one.
We had something weird but good last night – greek yogurt, feta cheese, tomatoes, onions, capers and a little lemon zest mixed together and baked on Orange Roughy. It sounds peculiar but it was very good. Surprised me.

A string of cheese jams — fig ginger, rose petal and purple basil (the last one is savory, with onion and ginger in the mix). Experimenting to see which is best with which cheese can form the basis of an entire supper.

I’ve never much liked cheese jams, but maybe because I haven’t tasted any as wonderful as the ones you’re describing. Mostly I just like my cheese on its own.
Though I did discover that fabulous cranberry wensleydale just before last Christmas. Mmm…

I love that you were so shocked at the lack of mustard in your fridge – it creates a wonderful image in my head! I love that Maille mustard too and always buy it in little glasses in France because they are so cute and good for vin plonk. I will look out for the green version on next supermarket trip.

There are two green versions – I think the other one has tarragon and something else in it.
I usually keep a back up of the original in the cupboard (I buy it when the one in the fridge is about half-way used up) so that’s why I was especially shocked to be mustardless. Must be that being busy thang – also ran out of mayonnaise last week!

We found a large size of Maille Moutarde a l’Ancienne in a French supermarche and are wishing we’d bought more than just the one nbecause we can only get the wee size here.
Culinary happenstance?
We discovered that Sacla make more than just pesto. They do a very good tomato and chilli paste too.
Stick a good dollop of this on a bit of cod – wrap in parma ham – and bake in the oven = a very quick and easy supper, along with some good bread and a bit of salad.
I’ve never heard of cheese jam but am intrigued so will find out more. My friend gave me a pot of her home-made chilli jam. I haven’t tried it yet but would assume it’ll be good with cheeses and cold meats.
Mmm Food. Yum.

I haven’t heard of Sacla, but I do miss the various sauces and pastes you can find at M&S. I was so busy stocking up on socks & underwear at the one in Bristol that it didn’t even occur to me to check out the food section.
Usually when they serve jams with cheese here it’s just some sort of sweet fruit compote or marmelade, which for me doesn’t work at all.

We have a dish – don’t know where the recipe came from that is gammon steaks with chilli jam – heavenly.

This is another food item I could easily become addicted to – and as you all know, I don’t even have a sweet tooth. But these lovely date & pecan biscuits are just ever so slightly sweet and gorgeously nutty … I think it’s a damn good thing I don’t live anywhere near Fortnum & Mason.
This was a gift from Jill & Tim, a UK travel writer who visited last week with her husband.

I love Dijon mustard, and believe it or not, have no problem finding it here in Korea. Have never seen the green peppercorn.
I found this stuff recently called Balsamic Glaze. It’s great on just about anything; eggs, salad, meat.
