Luna has already shown us that she quite enjoys a nice comfy cat bed, but this didn’t explain why we kept finding her asleep in Azar’s litter box out on my bedroom balcony. Nog suggested that perhaps it was because the sand got warmed up in the afternoon sun, which kind of only made it seem even grosser, though it must be said that this litter box gets very little use. I have it out there for when nobody is home and we separate the cats. Azar gets my room, with his food and water dishes and balcony litter box. Luna is put in the “air lock” hallway that connects to Nog’s room. And Loki has the run of the rest of the house. Which means having three litter boxes! Which I hope will be temporary, or at least that we’ll be able to go back to just having two after Luna has grown enough to fend off the big orange galoot when he gets overly playful.
But this still didn’t explain why Luna kept going out to sleep in Azar’s litter box. Until I put two and two together… that Luna loves being out on the balcony and she likes having a bed to sleep on. So this afternoon I put an old cushion out there and voilà! She suddenly wasn’t interested in the litter box anymore. Cats, eh?
Well, I guess you don’t have to worry about how to “blend the family scent” amongst your cats.

You kidding? Luna chooses to use the “communal box” in the bathroom, while Azar ends up using Luna’s box at the end of the hallway. Weird. At first Luna was also using Azar’s box, but I think she decided she preferred it as a bed and didn’t want to soil it. Loki tried using Luna’s box a couple of times but it’s way too small for him – very comical watching him try to fit into it – so he gave up and went back to using the bathroom one. Musical cat boxes…

You should see Fergie’s acrobatics on every box he uses — he has to put ALL FOUR PAWS on the edge of the box before commencing to drain the vat. Occasionally there has been a mighty bouleversement…

You should get that on video!

Congrats on mastering cat’s language! Yes, they always have a reason and you did great in figuring that out!
The name of your cat always makes me think about that Bella Luna song ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsuBkmzItZ8 )

I’ve never heard that song before!
Well, my Luna is certainly a bella Luna… but the scrawny little kitten of a few weeks ago is soon going to be a young lady with, I think, some serious attitude. She is growing by leaps and bounds!

Yes, she’s obviously changed since the first time I saw her on your blog. How great that is that you took those first pictures!

Ha! Gosh I love cats & their weird ways. We have 2 litter boxes right next to each other for our one cat, which just seems ridiculous. Frankly I’d rather be ridiculous than deal with any accidents! 🙂
I’m glad I found your blog today.

oh my:))
Maybe she likes the texture? Maybe a rough door rag would do? Are you already thinking of placing an extra tray there so one will be for sleeping and one for the toilet?
Oh god, but that’s just too funny:)))

Well, she’s a Cat and only cats know what they do and why… My daughter claims all cats are Souvereigns and thus never have to explain any of their decisions – they are just to be obeyed.

Perhaps the gravel absorbs the heat of the sun and remains warm which the cushion doesn’t? Maybe you need to fill a cushion with cat gravel and put it out there for her?

Right, next I’ll get one of those beanbag things and put it in the microwave… not!
That balcony gets the afternoon sun, so perhaps that’s why she likes it so much.

“bouleversement”…. love that word.
Yes, Benjamin has had his share of those moments if I don’t fill the box up quite enough. He comes running in and looks at me as if to say “What happened? The box just jumped in the air and tipped over! I had nothing to do with it!” That’s after he’s dug to China in order to cover something up.
