It’s been AGES since I splashed out on a totally frivolous treat like this. Without trying to sound morbid, when you don’t know whether the next PET scan is going to be a death sentence or not it doesn’t make sense to buy more possessions (other than stuff for work like computers, or things that enhance day-to-day living like the blu-ray player). I’d always rather spend money on experiences, like travelling or going out here in Sevilla.
But lately I’ve been hankering for something pretty. And so after a nice lunch out today with my friend Markus I strolled over to the opticians to see if they could fix my sunglasses because one of the legs (arms?) snapped off yesterday. And suddenly I was across from the Swarovski store. Well. It usually takes me forever to decide on a new piece of jewellery. But as soon as I saw these crystal earrings – and tried them on – they just seemed so right for me. As well as being completely unnecessary and absolutely useless. Which of course is part of their charm. Plus they are very pretty and sparkly. I love ’em!
What was your last frivolous purchase?
Fabulous choice, simple and yet so elegant! Yes me too I’d rather spend money on experiences so I just rented a tenor sax. I started lessons a few years back took a break when my mother was dying but I was so missing it. Now I’m enjoying it so much that I may become its new owner! Enjoy your splurge Shawn! You’ll wear them well!

That sounds fab but not nearly frivolous enough!

Well that’s about as friovolous as I get – given that I had a perfectly good mountian bike. I’m just so dangerous and unpredictable.

Ooh, sparkly! I went into the Swarovski shop in London last time I was there. Total drool-fest. Love youe earrings.
My last frivolous purchase was Season 4 of Fringe, earlier in the week. Made especially frivolous as I already had it on my LoveFilm rental list and had, in fact, already received the first 4 episodes. Bit it’s so good I had to own it.

I sat here in front of the computer trying to remember for so long that I got depressed.

They are indeed very pretty and sparkly! I’m glad that you treated yourself to them.
The last frivolous purchase that comes to mind is a harp. It’s a small, children’s lap harp that I came across in a second-hand store a couple of months ago. I went to the store looking for clothes for the kids, and found the harp (a quite solid-looking little wooden thing, complete with case and instructions and sheet music) among the toys. I have no need of a harp, but I suddenly felt a need to have it. I’m not sure whether I will ever use it, but it does make me happy to know that it’s there. If only I can manage to tune the damn thing.
