I love that Sevilla can still surprise me. The other day I was walking back from getting my stitches out and took a turn down a street I hadn’t been down in a couple of years at least. And I spotted this carbonería (coalyard) with its doors open, so I poked my head inside. It was a huge space, very dark and, not surprisingly, quite gritty. Then I saw a fellow sitting at the far end of the adjoining room, who put down his newspaper and asked if he could help me. Well, I couldn’t say I was just browsing (for coal?) so I asked him a bit about the place. Aside from different types of coal/charcoal and cut wood, you can also buy BBQs, houseplants, bags of soil and – curiously – used books. I think I’ll go back for a mini BBQ…

I think I could look at those coalyard walls for most of a morning.

Funny. It never occurred to me that there would still be coal vendors but in so many European cities people still use coal for heat or for cooking. So cool!
