Don’t get me wrong. I REALLY do not want to leave my present Casa Azahar, where I have lived now for more than three years, because I feel more at home here than anywhere else I have lived in Sevilla. And it would actually break my heart to leave here.
But we are living through difficult times and the truth is, I just can’t afford to live here anymore.
At first I thought back in March that getting through maybe six months would be doable, but then they cut off my government financial support at the end of June, so things got even more difficult. And it’s not only gone way beyond six months, it looking like this situation is going to last another year, or even more.
So with a seriously heavy heart I’ve started looking at possible new homes. Of course nothing I see looks like home, and taking into account the cost of moving, it would be almost a year before I even recuperated that cost so that I would actually be paying the lower rent. Is it worth it? Last year I thought about the prospect of taking in occasional lodgers, but unfortunately this just isn’t possible during covid.
I like to think that my real home is wherever those three guys are, happy and cosy on my lap. But dammit, leaving here would just hurt so much. Anyhow if any of you in Sevilla know of someplace nice please let me know. Things are getting a bit desperate.
I am so sorry to hear this! I know how hard it is to find someplace homey and within budget requirements. And with a pet (here that is an issue, not sure about Sevilla). Sending positive vibes & wishing you all the best. 🙂

It’s ripping out my heart, no matter how much I try to convince myself that it’s only A PLACE… I really made it my home.

So sorry to hear that you’re maybe having to move. This year has been an absolute pig – really hope you find something perfect.

I’ve thought about this fora couple of days before answering. You’re in a place I was close to in the late oughts — if you roll back there, you’ll see me posting about refinancing my house. For something like the fifth or sixth time. Just to keep afloat I was running up a credit line that let me borrow against the house, and periodically the rates would get lower than ever and I would re-fi and pay off the credit line, so that more than ten years after buying the house to begin with — when I thought there would be another income involved, however slight — I still owed about the same amount. Or more. I thought, “this can’t go on” and was literally considering moving to another state and starting over, because housing around here is so costly it wouldn’t help me to look for a “less expensive” place. Nothing would have been less expensive than my home had become, since I bought it before property values became ridiculously inflated.
So I decided to tough it out. for the time being and see what happened. I had a stroke of luck that doesn’t happen to everyone, I admit. I’ve been able to pay the thing off. But if you’d be a year seeing a decrease in expenses from a move, well, I think we might have half assed control of this thing in a year, enough for people to cautiously start work again. And you wouldn’t be traumatized. Looking to see what’s out there and keeping tabs on it can’t hurt anything, but this may not yet b the time to make a move. (Just thinking of all the air BnBs that people will be ever more frantic to unload…)
