Look what I got! I used to use Brita back in Toronto but later just kind of forgot about filtering water at home… until this week. It might just be me but lately the tap water has developed a very strong chlorine smell (and taste) which isn’t so noticeable with coffee or cooking, but it’s not great for drinking. So I checked out filters on line and decided to go with good ol’ Brita (plus this model was on sale at El Corte Inglés). A friend had also recommended Zero Water, but that’s only available on line and I prefer being able to purchase replacement filters just around the corner from my house. So I’ve just finished setting it up and I am looking forward to nice filtered lemon water in the morning.
I’ve got a Brita pitcher on every floor. One small one in the bedroom for the nighttime waterglass, one big one in the kitchen, and one in the cellar to fill up the cat fountain there. I couldn’t do without em. Otherwise it’s hot and cold running Clorox here.

It’s fairly normal here to have a stronger chlorine smell during the summer, but man the other day I opened the tap and – bam! – it really took me aback. My only problem now is that this takes up a lot of space on my one “tall” fridge door shelf, so I will have to find another place to store my open sherry bottles (they need to be upright).

I used to use Brita in England when we lived in a soft water area….hard water tastes much better. In the end getting the filters for an old model jug proved a bit difficult. I heard here the water is more chlorinated as the level in reservoirs goes down. I know from the news that reservoirs are under half full in most places because of low rainfall and high usage as it’s been a hotter Spring than usual. When we lived in Scotland the water treatment plant used sand filters (old Victorian system) and when there were problems the water had the colour of strong tea and sand particles in it. So a waste of time putting the washer on and NOT drinkable. Hence the Brita in the fridge!

I think the tap water here is soft? And yes, there is usually more chlorine used in summer, but it almost smells like a swimming pool these days. Anyhow, the filtered water tastes fine and doesn’t smell, so mission accomplished!

I have a brita too, but my water’s the complete opposite of yours. Boiled water has a metallic tang which is foul, so tea & coffee are horrible made from unfiltered water. You can even taste it in steamed vegetables. However, if you fill the kettle from the HOT tap before it gets warm, it’s ok. Once it’s warm, or if you use the cold tap…yuk!
But fill a glass from the cold tap…lovely. But again…fill a glass from the filter jug and the water tastes…the best I can come up with is “lifeless”. Kinda flat.
I think my water is hard, judging by the buildup round the tap spout. I tried to investigate that on South Staffs Water’s website, but they blinded me with science and I’m none the wiser!
I like sparkling water too but I’ve been feeling a bit guilty about all the plastic that wastes, so recently I invested in a soda stream. Again, though, I use water straight from the tap.

I think I also prefer mineral water to the filtered stuff, but I have to say the filter has removed all the chlorine smell. I think the water here is soft but, like you, I can’t find any official info about that.
