Koker is a chain of Spanish women’s clothing shops that has recently moved to Sevilla, and specifically into the old Casa Ruiz location in calle Sierpes, a jewellery shop that had been family-run for generations. Once Koker took over the premises they decided to paint over the marble and bronze façade, apparently without permission from the city council, resulting in a public outcry that spread across social media platforms and the press. The result was that the work was halted and the company was ordered to remove the paint. The photo above was taken this week and it’s not sure if this is the best that can be done as you can still see paint embedded in some of the cracks and pores of the marble. Also they have left the wood trim white, which is quite jarring. It’ll be interesting to see if the shop is successful.

better late than never

Over the weekend I printed up this handy list of emergency numbers for Sevilla/Andalucía. One is now up on the fridge door, I also printed two more wallet-size ones for me and the flatmate. The question is… why have I never done this before?? I mean, I pretty much remember that 112 is the general emergency number, but depending on the emergency calling direct could save some very important possibly live saving minutes without needing to have 112 redirect me. And so now I just hope neither Peter or I have to use this.

Yesterday the world of flamenco lost one of its legendary guitarists, Manolo Sanlúcar. I’m happy to say that I’ve had the honour and pleasure of seeing him perform here in Sevilla, something I will carry with me forever. The video above is from the film Flamenco by Carlos Saura with Manolo playing an alegría. Below he performs with another legend, and probably the greatest flamenco guitarist who ever existed, Paco de Lucía. It’s wonderful watching them together. Decanse en paz, Manolo.

Tried roasting whole garlics in the STORMCOOKER™️ the other day and all I can say is… wow! Of course this can also be done in a regular oven but I am so enjoying not having had to use my oven since getting the air fryer. Saves heating up the entire kitchen in summer and, more importantly, with soaring energy costs (last electricity bill was double that for the same month and consumption last year!) this should help a little. And every little bit helps.

Anyhow, slice off the end of the garlic bulb, drizzle with some olive oil, season with salt and pepper, wrap it in foil and cook at 190ºC for 20-25 minutes (be careful of hot steam coming out when unwrapping). Then have fun squishing the soft sweet cloves out of their papery casing. So easy and so delicious.
