Most of the time I forget I have a tumblr account, and in fact I don’t think I even started connecting to it until I got on Instagram. This blog is also connected to it. So in a way it’s just a “copy” of what goes on on those two accounts, which sometimes repeat. But it’s all done automatically, which is why I forget it’s there. I think my favourite thing about Tumblr is clicking on “archives” and getting this… azahar’s archives. Kind of a nice monthly photo album of my life.

Today’s Photohunt theme is “anniversary”.

Next week, on September 16th, it will be my 17th anniversary of arriving in Sevilla. I’ll never forget the long drive from Salamanca with two screaming cats in the car and, after timing our arrival perfectly to meet my landlord at 8pm, we ended up having to wait outside the apartment for another three hours because he had been held up. Luckily we were parked outside a fabulous bar that served us food and wine – in the car! – making the wait much more bearable, and also making my first new friends in Seville.

These photos were taken that first week in our new home. It’s a bit sad looking back as Lua and Sunny have since passed on, but it’s also nice remembering…

my 18th anniversary

Other than when the azahar is in bloom I think I love jacaranda time best in Sevilla, which this year has coincided with my 18th anniversary of living in Spain. Back in May 1992 I drove down from Bristol through France with a friend of mine, with all my worldly possessions in the back of her car, and that first thrill of crossing the border into Spain is still so vivid. Likewise the very real feeling that I was finally Home. A feeling that has never left me.

So much has happened since then and all of it has been worth it. Coming to Spain is without a doubt the best decision I have ever made. The other day I heard someone ask an American guy at the gym why he lives in Spain and he said -“because I can” – which I think is the best answer I have ever heard to this question and one that I shall use the next time someone asks me this. Since getting cancer anniversaries have come to mean a lot to me, and I’m celebrating this one by working hard so that I can enjoy many more.
