cold showers

A few weeks ago the hot water pressure started acting up. Sometimes it was there, other times nothing, although the cold water was working fine. Landlord had someone come over from his insurance company and – of course! – just before he showed up the hot water kicked back in again. So this guy reported back that there was no problem, even though I had told him it was an intermittent thing, and he actually told me (but not the landlord) that the water heater was probably blocked, so nothing was done. Spent the next couple of weeks fiddling with the cold-hot water taps to get the hot water to kick in, which usually happened.

Until last Saturday when it didn’t. And that was it, we’ve had NO hot water since Saturday morning. Not wanting to bother the landlord over the weekend I sent a text message hoping they could do something first thing Monday morning, which they did. Nice guy who came over late last night told me the water heater definitely needs to be replaced, called the landlord, and apparently no problem. Except now I have no idea when we are going to get a replacement water heater. Might be today (doubtful), more likely tomorrow or even whenever.

Meanwhile, we’ve been taking COLD SHOWERS since Saturday and – can I tell you? – it’s really really unpleasant and even painful. I’m actually considering booking a hotel or asking a neighbour if I can come over and shower. I mean, I could call the Corte Inglés right now and pay for a new water heater to be delivered and installed within 24 hours, but I already did that when the washing machine died earlier this year, and I really don’t think it’s up to me to replace these basic appliances. This is very frustrating.

old faithful

Say hello to my number one fan! I think I bought this back in either 2004 or 2005 (as it was pre-blog I can’t check) but I do know that it was back in 2010 when the band holding the front and back grids together went SPROING one day and I had to resort to tying them together by making clever use of freezer bag twist-ties. And since then that’s what I’ve done. Every spring I cut off the old twist-ties, give the grills and fan blade a wash, and put it all back together again.

These days Old Faithful has yellowed with age, with various bits now different shades of ochre and cream – none of it is the Storm Trooper White it was when I bought it. But danged if it doesn’t work just as well as the first day, and even better than other fans I have bought since then. I use this one in my bedroom during the summer because it’s silent as a whisper and those big blue blades whooosh a lovely soft breeze over me all night long, which is really the only way to get through the hot summer nights here. I think we are sometimes too quick to discard appliances that go sproing rather than look for a solution, which is not made easier by so many devices and appliances that seem to have a built-in self-destruct date. What’s your favourite old appliance?

Remember the other day when my 10-year-old microwave kicked the bucket, which left me in a quandry about whether a new microwave or a BBQ would take priority? Well, turns out neither after my 7-year-old toaster decided it would toast no more… wtf? Actually, I think I aided its demise because I’ve been toasting a lot of Portuguese bread lately, which is a bit too “short” to get out of the toaster without sticking something sharp into it… whatever. So today I found this cute little flat toaster for a mere 19€, which I think solves a lot of our toasting issues here at casa az. But it’s seriously left me wondering what’s going to be next.

Or maybe it’s the kitchen that’s jinxed. Why just yesterday I put on some asparagus for Azar, leaving two perfect stalks to gently steam in a flat pan while I went back to my laptop to do a bit of tweeting and other social media stuff. About half an hour later I wondered who was making toast (certainly couldn’t have been anyone here!) and that’s when I found that the pan was burned beyond hope, the asparagus had turned to charcoal and even the hard ceramic-plastic knob on top of the lid had melted. Then about an hour later I looked in the freezer for some ice and found a bottle of wine that I’d put in there the day before for a “quick chill”. I don’t understand. I have both a Portuguese lucky kitchen cat and a Chinese lucky money cat up above the cooker. Where am I going wrong?
