oranges

I read there’s a record number of oranges on the trees this year.
Sure looks like it.

sunny tuesday

It’s that time of year when we (hopefully) get enough rain throughout the winter months to see us through the long hot dry spell that is May to October in Sevilla. Trust me, drought summers here are not fun. But this makes going out even trickier (for me) at the moment as I am still limiting myself to once or twice a week and so NOW those days also have to fall on a non-rainy one. But this day was perfect. Lovely and sunny and still warm enough midday to only need a light jacket and the oranges are reaching their peak. Love Sevilla ❤

A curious cluster of oranges in this tree. Now that they have done duty as beautiful living Christmas decorations they will soon be harvested and sent off to be made into marmalade. And then …. azahar!

midnight-harvestIt seems like this year the annual orange harvest is taking a lot longer than usual. It’s rare to see trees full of fruit – especially in the centre of town – at the end of February. Not only are the oranges somewhat past their prime, but they become a hazard for people walking below.

I came across this group picking oranges in Plaza Santa Cruz at midnight, on my way home from a tapas tour. No sign of The Dude of course, with all this going on. It was also the first time I recall seeing people harvesting so late at night. Budget cuts perhaps? Who knows?
