Because this is the celebration of Woodie Guthrie’s 100th birthday I thought I would put up something by that American folk legend, except all I could find on YouTube were various versions of This Land Is Your Land. Which may be a great folk song, but frankly it’s not one of my favourites. So instead here is another travelling song written and performed by Woodie’s son Arlo. I remember listening to this as a restless teenager and longing to get on a train to New Orleans or anywhere…

Twenty years ago when I was living in Salamanca I saw Wim Wender’s Lisbon Story and fell in love.  Five years ago I finally got to visit this beautiful city and, as luck would have it, I also got to see Teresa Salgueiro perform at a Fado festival outdoor concert. This song is called Alfama, after Lisbon’s most famous barrio.

I’ve recently discovered an “oldies” radio station here that plays music from the 70s-80s-90s and while I lay awake in the wee hours this morning an old Chicago song came on, which made me wonder why they never play this one. So of course I had to look it up on YouTube (never did get back to sleep).

I remember wearing out the vinyl on this track when I was 14…
