Pope prepares to embrace theory of intelligent design
After having had the recent pleasure of seeing the latest Bill Moyer’s series on Faith and Reason, it’s a bit shocking to be brought back into so-called REALITY where people are not nearly as enlightened. Nor as thoughtful, as intelligent, as reasonable.
Will the Pope now be condemning the teaching of evolutionary theory in the same manner that the Holy Roman Church lies to their flock about the effective use of condoms to prevent the spread of AIDS in third world countries? And possibly more importantly, is the Vatican getting into bed with fundamentalist right wing American extremists?
Why would the Pope want or need to do this? Does he feel the power of the Vatican is slipping?
%$#&% sassafrazm (mutter mutter mutter). Nobody comes to my blog. I thought I might generate some discussion around exactly the same story, only you’ve gone and been and stolen my thunder. And my audience. Oi! I got there first.

I actually hadn’t seen your blog post – I came across the article this morning while looking for some stuff for a student. Had to find some political-type articles to discuss with her … and interestingly her father (devout Catholic and physicist) quite agrees with Darwin so my student thought he wouldn’t be taking too kindly to Ratzi’s latest move.
Meanwhile, if you’re upset because less people visit your blog it’s yer own darn fault for not switching to WordPress. π

What I’ve said on my blog π is that I can see where Ratzo’s coming from. JP2 aid that evolution is ‘more than a hypothesis’, and the official position as I understand it is ‘God created evolution’ (and is the prime cause of everything). This obviously won’t wash, though. Ratzo realises that if evolution is fact, the whole God thing starts to unravel, so he’s applying Jesuitical casuistry…The Catholic Church is ‘A Good Thing’. It depends (inter alia) on ID being true…therefore ID must be true. Similar logic is applied to the unevidenced nonsense that St Peter is buried under the basilica…it must be true because he’s the rock the church is built on.
Theologians play a sneaky game. They dress up their arguments in all sorts of pseudo-intellectual flim-flammery. If you argue on their own terms, you can be sneered at for not understanding properly what they’re saying. A case in point was when JP2 declared homosexuality to be ‘an objective disorder.’ This has a particular meaning in their theology. When you unpick it, you eventually discover that it’s based on their view that God created us solely to populate heaven with souls. One can then start to disagree with this on many, many grounds.
But really there’s no need to jump through the hoops that they’re holding out for you. Any right-minded person can realise that they’re constructing a justification for their a priori view that they don’t like poofs.

I’m with Reed, here. I couldn’t post anything because I was stamping around in the kitchen waving my paring knife and screeching about AIDS and blood transfusions and unwanted little children being neglected and realizing I’m not a Catholica so I don’t really care what he things etc etc etc Then I went out and pulled weeds imagining them to be the heads of

Edward, I suspect your last comment was aimed at Reed/Agapanthus (btw, Ag, should we be referring to you as Reed here to avoid confusion? Seems likely).
Anyhow, Reed is the poetry expert around here and no doubt she’d have some very interesting stuff to add to your post.
Meanwhile, I’ll have a think about your last question there, though my knowledge of poetry is next to nil.

Oh, okay. Lately I’ve been forgetting to ‘announce’ new blog topics on my h2g2 journal entry about my blog. I should probably go and say something there for those still subscribed.
And feel free to do so there yourself, Edward, if you want to – I know you used to do this. Might even reach a few people before Bloglines does – have noticed it’s been a bit slow lately (for example, didn’t see your Pope post on Bloglines until several hours after I’d posted mine).

Hi Eddie,
Just tried to comment on your Blog but it won’t let me unless I sign up for one of these bloggy thingies. I don’t want a bloody blog so tough mate, you will have to come here for my unmissable moments of clarity.
As for Ratzb*strd, he is simply no different to any of his forebears. He is allowing the RC church to adapt the cut of its coat to suit the age, without changing the cloth from which it is made. Thus keeping millions of middle-class, educated waverers hanging on to their mostly unsupportable catholic faith.
The problem is that this approach, and the jesuitical casuistry that supports it, works a lot better than the main atheist or humanist alternative. The truth is in the numbers in each camp.

Pope insults Muslims
“Benedict said “I quote” twice to stress the words were not his and added that violence was “incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul”.”
Since when did using other people’s words to express one’s vile opinions make them ‘holier than thou’ and somehow exempt from those opinions.

If memory serves (and in my case this is always a dodgy claim to make) I seem to recall seeing this document printed somewhere a few months ago.
Oh, boohoo. A prejudiced attack on a man who recently showed his own prejudice when quoting stuff against Muslims … then later saying he had ‘just been quoting’ and meanwhile causing riots and extra security measures for himself (at the expense of the taxpayer) as a result. π
