What are some of yours?
I came across this one earlier and posted in on the bad hair day thread (since it comes from Emo Philips – apparently we share a hairdo) but then thought it would be a good idea to start a separate post for favourite quotes. Anyhow, here is the Emo Philips one…
When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realised that the Lord doesn’t work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me.
Okay, your turn.
“When choosing between two evils, I like to try the one I’ve never tried before”- Mae West
and, from Fawlty Towers, “Do I detect the smell of burning martyr?”

This is a good quote from a good friend:
“When your kids are driving you the most nuts is when you give them the biggest hug”.
I’ve used it, and it works.

Just remembered one I heard recently on a cooking programme, (okay I admit it, I’m cooking obsessed, – no idea who said this quote)
Great French cooking shows the genius of the chef, great Italian, shows the genius of God.’
I love both cuisines but I think I’d feel more at ease with the chef being a genius actually.

I can never remember who this is by, so hadn’t posted it before now, but it also comes under the heading of famous last words, and making sure of your ground first.
In the US War of Independance, one of the British Generals when facing a troop of U.S. riflemen, and his troops were taking cover:
“Why are you hiding men, they couldn’t hit an elephant at this dist…”

Ah, that reminds me of ‘famous last words’ attributed to HH Munroe (aka Saki) who was shot and killed by a sniper just before dawn in the trenches (WW1).
“Put that bloody cigarette out!”
