Can anyone help with a few (probably quite stupid) questions?
I presently have hosting that was set-up by the guy who designed my clothing website. What I’d like to do is register a new domain name but I also want to hold onto the URL here at azahar natural clothing.
Would this count as two domain names? Could I get the clothing website set-up as a sub-domain, or would this be a bad idea?
I’ve been looking at BlueHost, which is recommended by WordPress and which offers the following for $6.95 US a month …
- 300 Gigabyte Hosting Space
- web hostingHost UNLIMITED Domains
- 2,500 POP/Imap Email Accounts
- 3,000 GIGS of Transfer
- SSH (Secure Shell), SSL, FTP, Stats
- CGI, Ruby (RoR), Perl, PHP, MySQL
- 2000/2002/2003 Front Page Extensions
- Free Domain Forever
- Free Site Builder
- 24/7 Superb/Responsive Sales/Support
My main question is about Domain Manager, Sub-domains, Add-on domains, Parked domains and Redirects. And that question is – what are they and how do they work?
Okay, I know (I think) that the free domain provided by BlueHost will be the Domain Manager. And that is the one I would want to have registered under the new name. Is there any way of doing that as well as transfer over the clothing website without having to pay for two domain names?
And while I’m making up my mind about what to do, how can I ‘save’ my new domain name?

You already own the azahar-natural-clothing.com domain so I think the best thing for you to do is to open a BlueHost account with the new domain name you want, and then get your azahar-natural-clothing.com to be a mirror of the new name. (That might be ‘add on domain’ or it might be ‘redirect’ I’m not sure.) You don’t need to buy two bluehost $7/month packages. If you want to reserve a domain name, just use the cheapest company out there. The one I get my web hosting from is pretty cheap (£18 for 2 years for .com), virtualnames, but they might be UK only.
Best thing to do if you’ve decided to go with BlueHost is to email their sales department, say what you want, and ask if it can be done. I’m sure it can, but they’ll tell you exactly what steps to take.

That’s what I was thinking, Dan.
So, I don’t reserve the domain name with the webhost?
Another thing. The domain name for the clothing website is ‘natural-clothing.com’ and ‘azahar-natural-clothing.com’ is either a redirect or add-on. I’m not sure what the difference between those two are either.
As I say, the webpage designer set all that up for us but he’s been difficult to get in touch with lately. Also, when I checked my account with Siteground yesterday it said it had expired, yet the website is still going. 😕
I can’t find an email address on the BlueHost website, just phone numbers. But yes, I think getting in touch with their sales department is the best idea. Thanks!

Well, I decided to take the plunge and sign up with BlueHost *gulp*. But then I stupidly clicked on the wrong option and got a 24 month subscription instead of a 12 month one. I’ve written to their help thingy to see if I can get it changed – can’t actually afford to pay for 24 months (eep!).
Anyhow, this is all rather exciting and more than somewhat scary. I’m not very knowledgeable about this stuff either, nursemyra, but I enjoy learning and Nog thinks I’m a ‘geek waiting to happen’. 🙂
My new domain probably won’t be active for a couple of days but once I get something put up there I’ll let y’all know where it is.

Probably the most sensible thing is to set up azahar-natural-clothing.com as a redirect to natural-clothing.com. Basically, you decide which one is the ‘real’ site, but if someone puts in the other one it will just redirect to the main one.
Also… I hadn’t noticed this before but there’s a tiny weeny little smiley at the bottom left hand corner of this theme! Awww!
I’m actually just setting up a web page myself at the moment, neuroscience at ENS, but I broke it last night and haven’t fixed it yet, so you won’t see anything until later in the day.

Is that one connected to The Samovar or is it a new domain?
I found some good explanations of the various domain types after wandering around the BlueHost help pages…
Add-on domain
Parked domain vs Add-on domain

I’d reiterate all that Dan said; have a couple other sites all hosted in one place (am decidedly not techie myself) and it saves $ and hassle to keep it all under one roof.

No, that one’s for my job, ENS=Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris.
Yep, so I guess you want Parked domain then. What software are you going to be installing on it? Getting someone to do it for you or doing it by hand?

Huh? 😕

Anyhow, here it is! With just a wordpress blog on the front page for now, until I figure out how to get all the other stuff over there.
I think this is going to be fun. 🙂
