Well, since then I’ve been staying in touch with Susan and Traci – two of the women who were sitting at my table. I’m going to be meeting Traci and her husband for tapas tonight at the new second location of Las Golondrinas (which I didn’t know existed until Traci told me), so stay tuned for some new photos soon.
And last Friday Susan and I met up early evening-ish for a few vinitos at Catalina. We had a great time and talked and laughed a lot … then what I thought was a mobile phone rang, but it ended up being Susan’s Blackberry. I’d never seen one in person before so of course Susan started showing me all the cool tricks she could do with it and, man, I’ve been hooked ever since and will start doing some research to see if I can justify getting one. Apparently these are also known as crackberries because of their addictive qualities.
But at least Susan is about to help out with another addiction. She is leaving for a ten-day trip to the States today and has agreed to be my popcorn mule and bring me back lots of Orville’s.
There was talk of duct-taping packets to her 4-year-old daughter to elude customs and we’ve also got code names now. It’s been awhile since I’ve had RL girlfriends – I’d forgotten how fun it could be. Especially little things like sending each other silly emails and having a laugh over a glass or two of wine. I’m so glad I went to that lunch!
Oooh, I am just so happy that you need to be Very Senior or travel more than 90 or 100 days a year at my company to get one – I have decide that I just don’t want one!
The point is just the addictiveness. I don’t need another eaay-turned-on access ot my worklife. As simple as that – I’m afraid that it’d cut down on family life, quantatively and/or qualitatively.
But sure, they’re nice and the inner geek in me tries to get a peek now and then…

Orville’s? Is that the microwave stuff?
My dear, treat yourself to some great popcorn by either shaking the kernels in a wire-mesh basket like the natives used to do, or putting a bit of oil in the bottom of a metal pot with a wire-mesh lid and shaking that. Both methods result in fluffy, tasty popcorn. If you use a normal pot lid, btw, the steam from the exploding corn will have nowhere to go and make it soggy.
Darn, I’m getting the munchies.

i refer to my ‘berry as the ‘dingleberry’. less an addiction and more a clinging annoyance… but i do use it effectively. sometimes passing notes to friends in meetings (attempting to get someone to laugh so hard coffee comes out the nose), or most importantly, checking my calendar while still in bed, realizing my first meeting isn’t til 9:00, and then sleeping in an extra half hour… the ‘always on’ thing was a problem at first, but i’m mostly over it!

I can understand not wanting to be “connected” to the office 24/7, but that wouldn’t be my situation. Anyhow, even if I could scrape together enough money to buy one I doubt I’d be able to afford the monthly operating costs.
Yeah, I could make ordinary popcorn, ian, but it helps to have good quality corn, which isn’t available here either. The Spanish don’t seem to be into popcorn much.
I used to have a wonderful old pot back in Toronto – so thick and heavy I could barely lift it to shake the kernels – and it made fabulous popcorn (but of course it always turned out even better when I used Orville’s popping corn).

Well, I tried to send you some…LOL, then you reminded me it’d cost more to ship than to buy, even in bulk!
Let me know how the “mule” worked out… 🙂
