– Lennon/McCartneyI was lying in bed this morning around 5.30, cursing that I hadn’t slept enough and dreading the alarm going off at 6.45 … and then I heard it. The first blackbird of the year, singing outside my window. And I smiled and almost laughed aloud because their song is so happy-sounding (before I knew their name I always called them the ‘wonky birds’ because they never seemed to sing the same thing twice). Oh, I’m so glad they’re back . . .

My favorite songbird is the mockingbird, of whcih there are many in California.
I can listen to them for hours. They imitate the songs of every bird they have ever heard, so their melodies are very long and heartbreakingly joyous.

I’ve never heard a mockingbird, toby – I don’t think we have them in spain. In the Spanish dictionary they give the same word as for nightingale, ruiseñor
The other day I was hanging up laundry on the roof and saw about half a dozen storks slowly gliding overhead, no doubt on their way back up north. In Salamanca they were everywhere. Anyhow, seeing them like that the other day really took my breath away – they are so big and majestic looking.

oooh, the White Album. Have you read Helter Skelter, and the Manson interpretation of that song?

No I haven’t, ian. It sounds like something I maybe don’t want to know? I love that song and have happily had it as an earworm since I posted it yesterday (segueing into Rocky Racoon, though I think Piggies actually came after it on the album).

Funny how little things like that make us happy, isn’t it?
I’ll be listening out if for it if I wake up early.

I did not wake up before my alarm clock. Three days in Madrid – with the lateness of Spanish dinners – made sure if that! (oh – and yes, I did enjoy the visit!)
Though our winter is very unwinterly, we haven’t got as far as blackbirds singing early mornings yet. But the song will do nicely until then – it is a lovely song 🙂

Where do blackbirds go in winter? Or is it that they only start singing in very early spring?
It truly is one of the happiest sounds I know… 🙂
Second only to when my little Azar goes ‘brrrip brrrrerp’ when he is being snibbled.

Okay, curiosity got the better of me, ian. But it seems Manson used Piggies and Helter Skelter as an ‘excuse’ for the Tate murders, not Blackbird. At least, according to this Wiki posting.

I saw you also mentioned blackbirds on h2g2, Fanny, and she who must not be named didn’t share your opinion, or seem to know what a blackbird was. Do they not have them in NZ?
