Remember when I mentioned over here that Telefónica had done Nog a favour by not getting in enough 8GB iPhones to meet the demand of their “customer loyalty” bonus points offer, which expired on December 31st? This was because we ended up getting the same great deal at Fnac without points (though I had to apply as a “new customer” and get a different phone number), which meant I still had all the normal points I’d accumulated over the past three years. And since Nog was interested in taking over my old phone number and account we got to use these points last weekend to get him a brand new – and totally free – mobile phone. This very sleek and slim Nokia with a camera and mp3 player. Bonus!
And as an extra bonus, we’ve put Nog’s pre-paid card into my old mobile phone, so the next time someone comes to visit they will have a phone to use (are you reading this, zoomer? Rain?). This will also work out better for staying in touch with friends who visit with their own mobile phones as the rates will be much cheaper than their “roaming” ones, plus the card is set to call our numbers at a special discount rate.
So all in all, a win-win situation. 🙂

Well, there is one downside – Nokia ringtones suck.
But a neat new phone for free is not to be sniffed at, and my old phone was showing signs of wear and tear.

I’d get a celphone, but there’s no access in this area, dangitall!
How’s the battery life on that iPhone?

“my old phone was showing signs of wear and tear”
Translation: my old phone was totally scratched and battered due to keeping it in the same pocket as my housekeys. 😛
Thanks for the link, Tal. I’ve actually been doing most of those things, though I was only able to get the iPhone update yesterday after I got the Blue Screen of Death problem sorted out (thanks to you and Beth). And of course, now that the novelty has worn off a bit, I’m not playing with Pippin (finally named! thanks Johnny!) so much and so the battery is now lasting about two days, which is similar to my old mobile phone.
On the days when I know I’ll need it to go online a lot I can just give it a quick charge before I leave the house.

I bought a new phone for the daughter at the weekend (her screen was damaged and unreadable: she impressed me by being able to forward texts to another phone by remembering the keystrokes involved, and then by being able to identify the sender from the style of their text: full words, use of punctuation, sign off etc)
Anyway, I was amazed at the redcution in prices of phones! Her new Sony Ericsson 360i is dinky and gorgeous and cost a mere £40. I fully expect in another couple of years that there will be disposable handys, same as disposable cameras. Now mine’s looking very clunky and over-sized in comparison – I wonder am I due an upgrade…

I feel like such an old fuddy duddy, still have the same phone we got 4 years ago and still don’t carry it with me and still don’t give the number to people. There are too many places where I DON’T have service, the thing is not that convenient. Besides, do I really want to take a call when I am in the middle of moving a rock from hither to yon? Not really. Like I said, out of touch fuddy duddy.

I don’t know if I would have upgraded if it wasn’t to get something so totally different. Mine was at least 3 years old (on the left) and Nog had been using my previous phone (on the right). Both Siemens. No cameras, nuthin extra. Thing is, they have such easy and intuitive menus that Nog almost prefers using my old one for now until he can get used to the new Nokia.
The Nokia certainly looks and feels good (very light and sleek) but it takes about three extra clicks to send a text message and – so far – neither of us can do that “almost without looking”, which we can both do on the old Siemens phones.
“Yay! I’ve got a new phone!”
Looks like you’ll be able to take your pick. 🙂
