Lifehacker: Five Best Web Browsers
Which is your browser of choice?
We used to use safari, but I prefer firefox without a doubt.

I’ve tried all five of them and much prefer Firefox. Chrome is my second favourite and “backup” browser. I often have two browsers up because I have two gmail and twitter accounts and that way I can stay signed in to all of them. Also, one bookmark toolbar just isn’t enough.
I tried Safari for awhile as my backup browser but found it went too slow. Never could get the hang of Opera (though that was a few years ago) and as for IE … yuk.

I’m a Firefox and Chrome fan, too. I had some problems with Firefox 3 when it first came out, but they’ve been fixed. I used Chrome while Firefox was giving me trouble. I despise IE, only use Opera when I’m testing web pages, and won’t let Safari anywhere near my computer. But that’s just me.

Safari on my mac, Firefox on a PC.
Interesting that one report suggested that IE8 is the Vista of Internet browsers…

Firefox.
I despise IE and uses it only at work, since it’s browser provided. I’ve tried Opera and Safari briefly, but can’t say those trials convinced me of switching.

We use safari on the new Mac, but used internet explorer with our old pc. I can’t really say I know the difference, and I’m computer illiterate enough to admit I don’t really care as long as I can get to my blog.

I have to use IE at work and it is SLOW. I hate it. I use it at home for the odd thing that I can’t use Firefox with (like working from home on the gvt server). Otherwise Firefox it the browser for me.

Interesting article from the WSJ about the latest Internet Explorer browser.
“If it were faster, I would say it was the best browser currently available for Windows”. Talk about damned with faint praise..

One thing I find irritating about the design of things like web browsers… You cannot place things on your screen where you want them… Being right handed and not inclined to want to drag my pointer up the the top left of my screen, I like to keep the back and forward arrows on the top right.
IE used to allow me to do that, Now, you can’t. Firefox allows me to do it.
And you are stuck with certain “features” reappearing all the time, like “Links”…. If I wanted them there every time I open my browser, why have I selected “hide”??????
I would like to drag some things to the right side of my screen. I recall some old programs used to let you do that. I don’t recall browsers allowing you but as I work all day long on the computer, often using a browser window, I want to spend the least amount of time having to move my mouse all over.
Follows, a rant…
I also find it irritating with things like Word… You have to hunt all over for features that should be (logically) in one place and are actually in others… Like creating labels… While I HATE WordIMPerfect, it had one advantage over Word. You could easily create a page of labels in increments (page 1 of 1, page 2 of 2) without having to first FIND the stupid feature to create labels and then use the most illogical steps to create your labels.
AND, every time they come out with a new version of something, they take do away with a perfectly logical feature and replace it with something completely illogical.
One of the bugaboos I have currently is using tables in Word. It used to be that if you had a table and needed to create a new row, you just hit tab and the new row was created exactly the same size as the row before.
Now, you hit the tab and you get this teensy little line you have to do three steps to make the row the same as the one before. And if you are in the middle of the table and want a new row, instead of right clicking and selecting “add new row”, you have to HIGHLIGHT the row and click “insert” to get a new row. Again, it is all teensy and you have to do the three steps to make it the same size as the rows on either side.
But, by far the most annoying thing is preferences which seem to revert back and you have to fart around for an hour trying to get the preference you want to work and to stick. Case in point. I work for the government and some people have set of a template so that it uses French as the grammar and spelling form. I change my templates to English and for a few days, I get all my spelling and grammar hints in English. Then, for no reason, despite my having saved my template in my own folders, I start typing and it keeps warning me that I am spelling everything wrong.
I will fix it and it will work for one word but then the next time I use the English work it tells me I have spelled it wrong. I futz about for another 20 minutes before I finally get it to work and three days later, it is back to French, again.
Who thinks of these idiotic things????

Firefox has a beautiful feature. You can right-click on any text-entry box and select “Add a keyword for this search”. Once you’ve done that, you can simply type your keyword followed by tour search parameters into the address bar and you will immediately see your search results.
And it’s not just for searches. If I have a misbehaving webpage I just visit the address bar and type “ws ” or “w3 ” before the url. This brings me immediately to the Web-Sniffer or W3 Validator results for that url.
I also have php, MySQL, and whois search keywords saved, not to mention h2g2, Amazon, and a plethora of others.
And then there’s the addons, including the rather wonderful “Am I on MySpace”, which lights up a big warning box when you inadvertently land on that Internet cesspit. (Surely no one goes there intentionally?)
TRiG.
