Does it help if I tell you it’s a thumb thing?
I’m not convinced it would actually make all that much difference (nor that it needs instructions – good grief!) but it’s a very affordable gadget and I’d certainly give one a try. Apparently it can also be used as a bookmark.

They sell them at the “Friends of the Library” shop here. I can imagine using one on some of the books that just don’t want to stay open. But I’d probably lose it, and have to replace it all the time.

My favourite little bit of rubber that I put on my thumb is a mini wiper blade, used for cleaning a helmet visor while riding in the rain. Worn on left hand only, as right hand is permanently on the throttle.
I don’t think I have my thumb in the illustrated position when I read – maybe I’ve been doing it wrong all these years!

I do most of my reading in bed and I have to hold the book with one hand because there is usually a little black cat snuggled up in my other arm (it’s so adorable – he loves it when I read in bed). Well, this is when I am lying on my back. When I’m on my side I can use both hands and Azar drapes himself over my head … like this!
Anyhow, I find I often get a cramp in my hand after awhile from trying to hold the book open one-handed, so maybe this would be a good thing. And as I would leave it on my night table there’s little chance of me losing it.
Now I just have to find one!

Having cats on me like that would make me claustrophobic, I’m afraid. It does look very cozy though, and if I had just one cat that liked to sit with or on me I wouldn’t care where they wanted to lie. I haven’t had a cuddly cat in 10 years.
I can see how for some readers that device could be useful. I don’t read in bed any more. The bifocals have made it impossible to do without getting a horrible crick in my neck. I used to do it all the time though, and I miss it.

I have to admit that having the “7 kilos of lurve” big Sunny dude perched ON TOP OF ME can only last about 15 minutes. After that he’s quite happy to go back to his “doggy” position at the foot of the bed.
But I truly love all of Azar’s cuddly ways. He has several adorable positions that include snuggling up and purring and just making me feel like the most special human on the planet. One of my favourites (shown in that photo) is when he drapes himself over my head, purring madly – that sound is so soothing to me – and then I feel him rest his little chin on my forehead as he falls asleep … slays me every time.

Truth be told, I would LOVE Benjamin to be this cuddle. He gets tired of me petting him when he lies close to me so he does a perfunctory “sleep near her” and then wanders off to sleep in my mother’s bottom drawer…
